Are there any banks that give miles for opening a new checking acc or fixed depositing $$$$$ for short periods like < 1 year ? What banks give APY for short term deposits ?

Actually BakDirect gives you one tenth of a mile per dollar per month. So if you have $25k for 6 months, you get 2500 miles per month, for a total of 15,000 miles. Guaranty Bank works the same way. (Both of these are tied to AAdvantage.)
It's still not a "good investment" compared to the money-market accounts, but it's not completely ridiculous as it would be if it were paying one hundredth of a mile per dollar per month as your example suggests.

I find BankDirect to be worthwhile relative to other checking accounts (which, of course, ING Direct is not one).
Remember that interest is taxed and miles are not.

Powers,
Welcome to flyertalk. I have had an account at bankdirect for years and love it. As mentioned above, it is 1 mile for every $10 per month.
One site that you may find useful if you have not already seen it is gary's www.freefrequentflyermiles.com. It talks about almost all of the various offers available for different kinds of transactions, but if you click on the finance section and go down to the banks, there are a number of links with various offers. Enjoy!

Open new account. 1000 miles.
Set up direct deposit. 5000 miles after 3 deposits.
Sign up for online bill pay. 5000 miles after 12 months and then on every anniversary date.
I have been using them and am quite pleased with the service. Minimum balance to avoid fee is 200 dollars. Online billpay is free with direct deposit. It does not have to be payroll but has to be ACH. I simply transfer few hundered bucks every month from my brokerage account via ACH and is working fine. BTW, info about this is not found on AA.com. It can be found on King Gary's web site or simply UFBDIRECT.com.
Takhliq.
