upgrade on award travel

I'm a UA premier (soon to be executive) and this is my first posting. Was wondering if anyone could give me some advice on how to get an upgrade while travelling on award ticket. I'm flying SFO-ORD-STT and back this week-end and I'm currently stock in the back of the plane. HELP !

couscous, welcome to FlyerTalk. It's your first post, and I hate to be pessimistic. However, I hold out little hope of you getting upgraded on a free ticket. It does happen, but rarely. There are too many people competing for the upgrades with paid tickets and with higher status than you. They only dip down to free tickets when the stock of people willing to pay with miles and certs are exhausted. Here's hoping that you will be that one in a million person!

Couscous,

I managed to swing it one time (and only once) for the spousal unit and myself. Bear in mind that this was on America West, and I was a platinum. Probably one of only three that Am West has.

Anyway, the gate agent hesitated, but went ahead and kicked in the FC when I asked at the gate if there were any FC left. This was mid-day on a Sunday, and the plane was only 1/2 full.

Rare as hens teeth, but it happens.

Welcome couscous!

I am in agreement. Very unlikely, especially since the STT route is flown on an A320.

Your best bet is to smile and schmooz with your gate agent(s), however, after looking at this weekends flights (as a sampling), F is already sold out.

I also would suggest posting a topic such as this directly in the forum which the subject is related.... UA in this case-your topic would be much more "targeted" there.

Good luck and welcome again
