I agree. Nordstrom's is not perfect, but, most other card companies are a lot less perfect. They helped me with a rent a car fraudulent charge in France a few years ago when I suspect others would not have. ^

It's nice to be able to say something positive about a bank. :)

this disease is catching on

Got a notice from my 1 of my banks today that as of 2/1 they will be charging a flat 2% fee for withdrawls outside the US from an ATM using their ATM or Debit card

Sovereign is the bank, can the others be far behind?

Sovereign also charges a $5 fee for overseas withdrawals. I'm looking into opening an account at the CommerceBank down the street, if only for international travel.

Wiki discussion

Lately there have been a number of changes to the wiki incorporating info for UK-issued cards.

Do you think this info makes the wiki more useful? Or does it make an already-complex topic more confusing?

I'm trying to decide whether to revert those changes and make the wiki explicitly a resource for US-issued cards, or whether we should include our friends from across the pond. My concern is that if we try to make it a global resource, it's going to get so complex it will no longer be useful.

Please respond on the wiki Discussion page:

I am in favor of encouraging posts on all countries of issue, if only for comparative purposes. Of course, whoever is the power wielder here could always impose a bit of organization.

Just got back my from local Sovereign Branch and they knew nothing about anything except the $5 fee, so I called 877-SOV-BANK and she too didnt know but put me on hold and asked her mgr.

Turns out as of 2/1 it wont be a 2% nor a $5 fee. Its gonna be BOTH!! :td:

Time to definitely Close out this place.

no fee from Citi aadvantage gold !

well, this is an OLD thread, but being a noob, I thought I had better post here rather than breaking some "rule" by posting a new thread.....
Just checked my citicard statement for hotel & rental car & windsurfing rental in the Netherlands Antillies.
1. they were billed in US dollars
2. I paid the charges from Michigan on line.
Result was no 3% or other fees! was I just lucky or did I misunderstand the other posts here?

Just look at the part of your statement where they normally put interest. If you looked online at an interim statement, the interest may not be there yet.

Thank you so much for being considerate and not starting another thread. That is refreshing, I wish everyone would use the search before posting the same question over and over and over. However, this is not an old thread. If the last post was dated before 2005, that could be considered an old thread.

Now for your question. What was the exchange rate at the time of the transaction? Next Citi has done the 3% two different ways in the past. I have seen it figured in with the charge as one lump charge on your statement and if you calculat what you purchased with the exchange, you would find a descrepancy that would probably match the forex. The other way is that you see a charge at the exchanged rate and later you see a charge for the forex fee as a seperate transaction. I am sure it is there as citi is not to good at giving freebies. :D

This may also be where it is hidden, but remember the online is not going to show everything instantly, so when you get your paper statement, you may see it.

1. Do you mean the merchants billed in US Dollars, or only that the charges appeared on your credit card statement in dollars?

2. Citibank does not include the foreign currency fees in the individual charges, there will be a separate Finance Charge. (Finance Charge is not the same as Interest, Interest is merely the most common type of Finance Charge.)

rminky Jan 21, 2007 3:39 pm

the charges are billed out in US dollars even tho they use Florins as their currency. So, Citi did not have to do any conversion. Also online charges match invoices for services that will be provided in Feb when we go there.
I have not gotten my paper statement yet, so will check it when it comes in. It should show up easily as we always pay it in full each month.

It totally escaped me that you said the antilles. They would charge in US dollars.

Citibank in the US does charge the 3% fee for all charges made outside of the US, even if in US dollars, or so a Citi representative told me a few weeks ago.

On another note, as far as I know the US does not have an official language, although a few states and cities do. Or has that changed recently?
