That's why we try to push people to the wiki. Otherwise we get the same "Cap1 has no fee!" "Cap1 sucks!" "Cap1 doesn't suck that much..." posts over and over again every two pages.

Perhaps it's time for the mods to close this thread? We could start a new one with a prominent link to the wiki in the first post.

I just got a notice from Charles Schwab card, they will start charging foreign exchange fee of 2% starting May 1, 2007, not a good card anymore for us. :td:

I do understand this is a problem. But if a Flyertalk moderator ever closed a thread on the grounds that the information is available somewhere other than Flyertalk, I would be disapointed. It's great that some people are finding Wikipedia to be a reliable and useful resource. But I would hate to have to start wondering when I read Flyertalk if potentially useful information has been banished because it exists elsewhere, link or no link. Wiki's are too easily manipulated or infected with false information and I prefer to read Flyertalk discussions, even with all their messiness.

Who said anything about wikipedia? I'm talking about our very own Flyertalk wiki, where several of us have worked hard to summarize this thread and the many, many answers that have been posted to the OP's original question. I'd actually argue that the information there is far more reliable than the information here. And it's certainly more accessible.

I'm not saying we should banish the thread. Just that if we can't find a way to make an in-thread sticky linking to the wiki, we should close the thread and start a new one with a prominent link to the wiki in the first post.

I'm pretty sure that Discover is more widely accepted in China than Visa, MC or AMEX due to some recent partnership with a major Chinese credit issuer. I forget the name right now, but I read something about this a few months ago.

Discover Cards are currently accepted in Canada, Central America, Mexico, the Caribbean and China.

China is a result of an alliance with Union Pay.

I thank you for the hard work on the wiki and agree this would be a great asset as it is being built out, however, the search function needs an overhaul in order for it to be useful. For example, I tried searching on "Latin America" as I am probably going to be doing a lot of travel there in the future and want to research the best potential alliance for this, and I get hundreds of results including American, etc. This makes the search useless and therefore the wiki difficult at best to use. I look forward to seeing improvements and think that this can be a very valuable section to FT.

I made a small update to the Wiki. I have used US debit cards in PIN transactions at big retailers (Carulla, Exito, etc.) in Colombia for several years without any difficulties.

Colombia seems to be an exception ... I don't get presented with the PIN pad very much in other places, they just run as credit.

Thanks very much for this. It motivated me to visiting my local Wells Fargo a few weeks ago and get the Signature card. I am in Europe now and I just checked my latest transactions online and YESSSS! No more foreign transaction fees. It is $1.33 to the Euro on all my charges this week and $1.96 to the pound.

Good bye Merrill + card and your terrible 3% foreign transaction fee.

I think the wiki is a great -- one thing I would add is that maybe the last "update" on a credit card status should show the date so people know how current the info is. I have a capital one card that I've kept for years (with little activity) used exclusively for foreign travel.

BTW, I have read in the fine print that even charges that are reported in USD but originating from overseas will get hit by a "foreign transaction fee" by some credit card issuers. Unfortunately I can't remember which banks they are, as I intend to only take credit cards overseas that don't charge foreign transaction fees over the 1% Visa/MC fee at most. Has this topic been discussed? This is yet another way I think banks are being really greedy with their fees.

AFAIK, any card that assesses a foreign "currency" fee will assess it on foreign USD transactions now.

Not true. See earlier discussion in this thread. Amex for sure doesn't. For the Visa/MC issuers, Citi, for one, does not.

this is a very good card and doesn't get the attention it deserves.

What kind of relationship is required in order to be able to get this card?
