You should be suspicious of anything CapOne does.

Check with a credit union in your area. Mine used to charge nothing for foreign transactions, but they now pass the 1% fee on, which I can handle. Best deal on the cards I use regularly.

I am beginning to wonder if Fidelity/MBNA has different T&C for different classes of customers. I've made this point before, but I'll repeat because I think it is important (and funny, in a way): if a single card has different T&C for different customers (as MBNA already does), then discussions of "which card is best for foreign exchange?" is pretty useless, LOL. Card XYZ may be great for one person and lousy for another. |

I am beginning to wonder if Fidelity/MBNA has different T&C for different classes of customers. If you have a Fidelity MC, can you please call and double-check that your card still doesn't have a fee? And please give us the exact name of the card ("Fidelity Rewards," "Fidelity Investment Rewards," etc.). The real goal here is to make the wiki as correct as possible, since nobody in their right mind is going to read through this whole thread. Unfortunately, most people seem to just post "Fidelity is now 3%" or "My Fidelity card is 1%." But there are several different kinds of Fidelity cards, both Visa and MC. |
Fidelity Visa PNC debit
I use my Fidelity Visa from PNC debit card for international charges. No point, no surchages, 5 free ATM's a month. There is a minimum account balance for the deal, I think, but I no longer remember what it is - I've done it this way for a while and have been pleased with the exchange rates that show up on my statements.

I have a MBNA American Express card which is supposed to be surcharge free for foreign purchases. Whether this is actually fee free or it means no MBNA fee on top of what Amex charges, I do not know.

Capital One works really well...
Just used it in Africa and Europe. No foriegn fees whatsoever and the exchange rates were good.
I doubted the "No Hassel" promise... but sure enough, I don't get calls asking me to sign up for credit protection... and, unlike my old Fleet and CitiBank cards which shut down my account after charging in Africa 2 years back (and yes, I had called ahead and told them when I'd be there and in what countries) CapitalOne didn't leave me looking for a phone to call my credit card company back in the states. Nothing but good things to say about my experience with them. |
I believe the MBNA cards a lot to do w/ when you open it
I have a Schwab Visa which is handled by MBNA - in the application T&C it specifically mentioned about card open after a date in April (I forgot the exact date), it will be subj to a 1% foreign transaction fee.
I opened the card in Feb for the $100 Visa Gift Card sign up bonus and the need for a no foreign transaction fee card. Currently the same card is offered by Schwab with $50 sign up bonus and the T&C said 1% foreign transaction fee. you can go to Schwab home page, click the banking and credit card tab and it should bring you to where you can find clickable area to get to the current bonus offer and read the T&C. I remember reading about Fidelity MBNA cards would grandfather cards opened before April or June, I forgot. But new cards are subj to the fee, though I forgot it was 1 or 3%. |
