Is this a soft cap or a hard limit? If they involuntarily bump you off the last flight of the day, you can and should receive 200% of your remaining ticket value, up to $400 in -cash-, for your troubles.

It's a myth. I was offered (and accepted) $300 VDB compensation on a SEA-SFO Shuttle flight, confirmed on the next one an hour later (which I flew).

I suppose you are right. Southwest has people convinced that they only pay out "the maximum value of your one-way ticket". Like everything else, you get what you negotiate.

At what point are you volunteering to get the $300? After boarding has commenced, after boarding is over, prior to boarding (if so, how far ahead)?
