Request for Mileage Info please...
I am currently undertaking a university project on FFP's and am after some info... these are the questions that I need answering:
How many miles are there on the market that are waiting to be redeemed?
How many 747's would it take to fly off this liability?
Any one with the answers... or point me to a site that has this info? Your help is very much appreciated!
THANKS!

I don't have answers for you, but you might want to direct them to Randy Petersen, who publishes Inside Flyer magazine and it's WebFlyer web site, and has many industry stats at his disposal.

One subtlety to note is that the points are split amongst millions of accounts whose balances cannot, in general, be combined to redeem the miles. Accounts which have balances lower than the minimum award levels are said to contain "orphaned" miles if the holder cannot accrue more to reach that minimum award level.

Good point. However, "orphaned" miles may not be totally lost unless the amount is trivial. Many programs offer magazine subscriptions, charitable contribution options, and such to use up miles in small(er) amounts. They're not enough for a ticket, so the airline isn't on the hook to fly the holder anywhere, but there's still a little financial liability there.
