How to get miles while paying for college
I will be paying for 2 private college tuitions next year. Unfortunately both schools don't accept credit card payments. Is there a way to use my credit card and get miles, through a third party or other kinds of payments?

I would of course complain to the school. But until then:
Traveller's Cheques from Chase are a good way to get a few thousand dollars' worth. Try www.currency-to-go.com
Please check other threads on the topic as to frequency of ordering (once a month) guidelines to avoid being cut off.
Also, www.x.com offers free checking accounts which can be funded up to $1000 per 6 months with a credit card.
I think that X.com discontinued the referral bonus, otherwise I won't mind should you use my email [email protected] -- but whatever you do please don't mention my name to Chase!
Hope this helps.

The Chase traveller's cheques are only good for foreign currencies. Are there anything else ? I will have to pay about $75K a year for 4 years. It would be nice to be able to get miles for all or part of it. The schools also take money orders. Can I charge that?

Reports from others, and alleged official Chase policy is that you can order only once a week, and after 4 orders within a year you will be cut off. This has varied for some, I've received two orders from the same week, etc... It seems that the 4 total orders limit may be more strictly enforced.
Also, there is a bug in the site at Chase where even for an order of $1000 you will not be able to choose the delivery option. You may have to order $950 instead. I would certainly try www.x.com - that would give you $2000/year, which is better than nothing.
Money orders, much like T/C's usually, cannot normally be charged to a credit card.

Try this - it worked for me with my tuition
I checked for all the Internet banks that accepted CC to open accounts. Doing this I was able to use $24,000 on my cards. I incurred no finance charges since I paid the cards off immediately. I used checques from those accts to pay the tuition. For second semestre I had my sister open accounts at those same banks and used CC again so this semestre I spent almost $12,000 on the cards.
A bit of a hassle doing all those applications but it works.
Plus go through www.gomez.com and get more bang for your buck with the bonus money deals

lavedder,
Here's an article about sending money to others (by email where you can use your credit cards as the source of funds. Maybe a good way to send money to your two college bound kids.
Also, you may be able to send enough money this way to fund tuition?
http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/Forum1/HTML/002395.html
(The thread points you to a Los Angeles Times article quote: "to electronically zap emergency loans from their (parent's) credit cards to a college student's bank account.")
Hope this helps.

It might be too late for this, but you can buy US Savings Bonds on-line. If you have an AAdvantage Card ( you can apply for one and get 10,000 miles ) you then can get a click card which will give you double miles until the end of May. I think you have to have them for 5 years to not have any penalties. You could find out what the penalties are for cashing in early.
Currently I Bonds are bought at face value and are paying 6.98 % guaranteed for 6 months. Cashing them in before 5 years is a 3 month interest penalty. I have an article from Jan 7, 2000 Tribune if you would like it faxed to you. You can buy a $500 bond per transaction. I would go ahead and apply for a click card at the same time as getting a regular AAdvantage card. They would wave the extra fee later. The sooner you could do this the better.
