Does AA still give gold status for passing million miles???

Yes. As soon as you have accumulated 1 million AAdvantage miles (doesn't have to be BIS miles, but can come from the Citibank card, etc), you get gold. At 2MM, it's lifetime Platinum.

That is correct - as things stand now.

However, there is an unconfirmed rumor this (all miles counting) will change within the next year.

This question would have been more appropriate in the AA forum.
