My wife is a Premier Exec. and I'm 1K with UA. Where we sometimes have a problem is when we take our kids along. We have 2 PNRs, one with me and one of the kids and one for my wife and the other child. (By the way both of our kids are college students)

Many times we can't get all four of us upgraded. If only two of us get the upgrade, we usually let the kids ride in F or all of us in coach.

I witnessed that once on LAS-ORD, and couldn't believe it...It was refreshing to see...Maybe it was you?

Anyway...If I'm with someone else, it's generally someone who doesn't fly a lot...Friend, girfriend, family member. If we all don't get upgraded, I'll generally give the other(s) the seat in F while I sit in coach. I enjoy F, and experience it on most of my flights, so why not let someone else enjoy it who doesn't get to normally fly F?

I would never upgrade me and my wife and leave the kids in coach. We'd all go coach. I wouldn't upgrade my kids either if my wife and I had to sit in coach.

I would rather save the FF miles for family trips than spend em on upgrades for my business trips. I see it is my payback to my family for being away from them.

I seem to remember a thread around here about how far would you go to get miles . . . .

I ALWAYS try to upgrade even if I am traveling with my better half. Since I don't really care about J vs Y (I sleep on 99% of my flights) I always give the upgrade to my other half - but I get the extra mileage which makes me REALLY happy. I will do almost anything for the extra miles - which is why I am doing a variation of the "Mexican Hat Dance" in Dec!

Regarding upgrading the parents and leaving the kids in coach, my boss used to do exactly that...but only after the kids were at least 10 years old, and understood that even if the airline permitted the kids to visit in front of the curtain, the boss & wife didn't permit it. "When you earn the miles, you can fly up front." was his attitude.

p.s. the kids were [abnormally] well-behaved. I have no doubt they were no trouble to their seat opponents, and probably a joy, actually.

Interesting that no has mentioned FEAR as a factor in refusing upgrades. Statistically speaking, pax seated in the rear of the aircraft are safer should the unthinkable and thankfully rare disaster occur. At least that is my commonly accepted wisdom. People who refuse upgrades may be doing it out of a highly developed sense of self preservation.

Nevertheless, I _fearlessly_ seek the upgrade every time.
