CBC Newsworld is just reporting that 179 people were on the Singapore Airlines plane which apparently was taking off for LAX when it was hit by a windshear and plunged back to the ground, exploded and then crashed into a China Airlines plane parked on the tarmac. (No details if that plane had passengers on board or was just parked.)

Strong winds reportedly seemed to have forced the aircraft down and there was an explosion. There were conflicting reports on the number of dead.

And now three survivors said they felt the plane slam into something on the runway while trying to take off at Taipei's Chiang Kai-shek International Airport.

Sure puts all the UG discussions in a different perspective!

With condolences to all with family & friends involved.

It is now being reported that 18 and possibly more passengers have survived, that the fire is out, and that no second plane was run into. All this according to CBC Newsworld.

Great reporting, FTers! I new I could count on at least a couple of decent links before checking out the AP wires this morning. But in the future let's start these threads in the News forum. Thanks!

From CNN.com
Thirty people were injured but no one was killed when a Singapore Airlines plane bound for Los Angeles crashed late today shortly after takeoff from Chang Kai-shek International Airport in Taipei, Taiwan. James Boyd, a spokesman for Singapore Airlines, said that "none of the injuries were life-threatening."

There has been an unconfirmed report of one death by a survivor... but uncertain if it has been confirmed...

One official on CNN stated that they would not be surprised if there were some fatalities due to the nature of some of the critical injuries...

But truly a blessing that there are so many survivors....

I am reading the local news (in Chinese) now. 47 confirmed fatalities. Plane broke into three segments. Earlier reports of crashing onto a China Airlines cargo plane is not correct (fell near the cargo area where many cargo jets are parked).

Some Taiwanese official (local governor) said that the fatalities may reach 100 as nearly that many had been unaccounted for about 1 hr ago (2:18 EST)

FWIW, I heard through family (Singaporean) some 15+ years ago that SQ pays bonuses to their pilots to maintain punctuality so the decision to fly in a typhoon may have been affected by this.
