And to answer the thread question fully ANY purchaseable UA fare, no matter HOW cheap, can be upgraded by a UA Systemwide certificate. WORLDWIDE. These are given free to UA to high tier flyers. One way itineraries of over 15,000 miles can be upgraded thus using one cert.

How do you get twelve of these babies for less than $1000 of paid flights?

CX's ASIAMILES allow you to upgrade on any fare type in economy(even consolidator's fares) to Business on the following airlines -

CATHAY PACIFIC, SWISSAIR and BRITISH AIRWAYS. All upgrade awards are on a return basis with the exception of Cathay Pacific which can upgraded oneway only if required.
