ozstamps - I received a letter in the mail from United detailing the True Flyer Bonus last week. It was also in about every paper in the USA. So I think most MP members know about it. They may not understand it fully, but they know about it.

ozstamps Sep 12, 2000 12:28 am

Thanks Baze .. the "smail mail" to OZ must be being flown airmail on UA - and the bags are still stuck in ORD!

Yes I realise there would have been some USA newspaper article coverage, but with 37 MILLION MP members worldwide, my guess is only a few % had read about it in papers, or as you say, full understood it, as papers typically tend to abbreviate the whole promo down to one or 2 sentences .. and THEN mostly mess those up!

Well it seems that it is possible by a rather round about way to gets miles from Marriott Rewards for tickets in business or first, see this thread: http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/Forum...L/000336.html.
At least on AA or UA anyway, (and if you already had miles in their program). I am quite new to MR, having joined just before I flew on my LP mileage run in June, but in view of their much more extensive and in quite a few cases generous awards I don't think I'll have a problem with having to transfer miles to MR if LP is going to make it difficult to get award travel. Good example of a great MR award is a 7 night stay in any participating Marriott in the world and 2 coach tickets to that destination for 100,000 miles (200,000 points). For me that would mean staying at a first class hotel in Paris for example (assuming availability) and also getting two tickets (hopefully for next summer), not a bad use of 100,000 miles IMHO.

Sorry, but the above link seems not to work. I did copy and paste as usual, but it ain't working this time. Look in Marriott from 7/28/00 under "Best Use of Marriott Points". Maybe someone else can get the URL for this.

Is the Latin Pass site down, or is it just me ? All I get is the message "cannot find server"

janejet Sep 12, 2000 7:42 am

When you get the message "cannot find Latin Pass" you need to worry!

dhacker Sep 12, 2000 8:36 am

The LatinPass site is working now.

Vindesante: Your link will work if you remove the period from the end:

The big story about the vacation awards with UA and reportedly AA is that it allows you to get big miles for your points. Using these awards, it seems that you could turn 1,000,000 LP miles to 1,200,000 or more UA or AA miles! And, you would get 70 nights at the best Marriott resorts, 1000 ATT long distance minutes, and 25% Hertz discounts thrown in for good measure. If this really works, I think this might qualify for an eyespy or maybe challenge the original LP bonus for the best promo of all time -- except it's not a promo, it's just standard awards.

The 1.2 million miles would come from requesting coach tickets on UA from the US to Australia. If they let you do UA to India, the total potential UA miles jumps to 1.6 million!! This is because UA charges 80k for each US to India award so Marriott would transfer 160k miles for each 200k point award that only cost 100k LP miles. There may even be options that yield more miles. The 425k point award gets 4 "tickets" and 20 hotel nights. This is too good to be true!

ozstamps -

I guess if UA was contracted to carry the mail to AU then who knows when you will get your letter. I agree there are quite a few MP members outside the USA but I would venture a guess that a rather large percentage of the total number reside in the USA, that is the only reason I mentioned the newspapers.

I hope you get your letter soon and lets spread the word about the bonus. FT is a great way to get the word out.

If I can work it out I may try and come to the Altbier (sp?) in DUS. It will be nice to meet you and others.

BAZE .. lots of fall seat sales starting now!! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

Anything to Frankfurt is good the local guys say, as there is a fast train straight to DUS. Hope to share a drink with you and many others there in November 11/12. Randy's assistant emailed me 5 mins ago to say she will get it on his calendar.

My guess is there will be about 40 people there, from all over the world, so will be an interesting weekend.

For anyone who has not kept up with the European FT wekeend it is all here:

I am a bit confused. I understand using Marriott points to get the air on UA but can you transfer all the LP miles to MArriott?

thanks,
DR

dupe.

dhacker Sep 12, 2000 9:58 am

drtravels: That is the big question. According the the latest newsletter, you CAN!! Maybe there is a limit or cap, but the newsletter doesn't say so.

Schutzee Sep 12, 2000 10:17 am

As UpGradeMe pointed out, there is a cap on points to miles transfers. See http://www.marriottrewards.com/rewar...ms/mileage.asp

dhacker Sep 12, 2000 11:46 am

Schutzee:

That limit is only the case for straight mileage transfers. But that's not what I'm talking about now. Marriott actually transfers miles to UA and possibly AA when you order flight or vacation package awards that include air travel. So that make the transfer limits completely irrelevant for these airlines because the flight and vacation awards yield more miles than the straight mileage transfers do. My parents have used the 200k vacation package award code #713 and asked for Hawaii as the destination. They received 70k miles in their UA account, a cert good for 7 nights at ANY Marriott (1 year expiration), a 100 minute phone card, and a Hertz discount cert. I believe that if they had asked for Australia, they would have received 120k UA miles, or India 160k miles. These awards are not actually the mileage awards that are subject to the two per year limitation. The only limit or cap that would seem to be a problem here would be a limit on LP transfers to Marriott, not on use for flight or package awards once the miles become Marriott points. The details of the package vacation awards are at:
http://www.marriottrewards.com/awards/tpackage.asp

The rules for these awards even state that you can use the various components (air, hotel, etc.) separately. As mentioned on the Marriott forum, Marriott apparently has no way of knowing how you use the UA miles after they send them to United. I'm not sure if they even care.

Schutzee Sep 12, 2000 12:00 pm

dhacker,
Thanks for the clarification. This is awesome. When I finally get my million LP miles, I may transfer the bulk of them to Hilton and Marriott. Let's just hope LP doesn't restrict the transfers
