Glen, you mentioned geting comped by other airlines is you prove elite tier status in another. Some questions come to mind:
a. as holder of UA1k status, what do you think are the chances of getting comped inside *A
b. how would you go about asking to be comped by the like of AA/BA or CX, or for that matter any other rival alliance airlines?

Yes, Qualiflyer exists and if you're planning to use your rewards in business class give the best value/points on intraeuropean flights. (EG: OSL-BCN in C=25,000 MR points)

james: Qualiflyer (does it still exist?)
yes - I earn my Qualiflyer miles rarely by flying, but with my Diners credit card. And I spend my Qualiflyer miles in general as high priced (not discounted weekend-) same day inner-European return tickets (business=25'000 miles, eco would be 20'000 miles).
at the Sevilla-world-exposition, Switzerland's pavillon had the headline "Switzerland, does it really exist?" - it does still, and so does Qualiflyer (so far)

You can become an AA elite without flying AA. Simply fly US shuttle and you get 500 status miles on AA in addition to those on US. But this still requires flying, of course.
