At the top of this thread, and every thread & forum on FT, under "help" is a link for "airport code lookup"! If you type in the name of the city, it will give you the airport code. If the city name has more than 1 possibility (ie - Manchester), it will give you the codes for all (Manchester, NH and Manchester, England)! Or if the city has 2 or more airports (ie - Washington, DC), it will give all airport codes for that city (DCA for National & IAD for Dulles)!

I hope this is what you were asking for.

thanks....I have a list of the codes and cities.....what I was hoping for.....like MCO Orlando is Mickies Corporate Office......Bakersfield.....Boy Flat Land......does anyone have anything like that to help with?

Start posting the ones you can't remember, and we'll come up with some snappy mnemonic devices fer ya'!

Why would you want to look them up? If a poster wants to be understood, he or she will write out the name of the airport. If instead the intent is to appear "in the know" or cool or to communicate to a select few, acronyms are used.

I have been doing this miles thing for more than a few years, and I love this forum as as one of my major sources of information. But if I don't understand the acronyms, I assume the post is not meant for me anyway, and just go onto the next.

BNA is my home airport (Nashville), and is BNA for historical reasons -- it was originally Berry Field (in NAshville). Sometimes knowing the airfield names or histories of the airports can help in memorizing the codes. For example, Louisville=SDF, for StanDiFord Field. (Anyone want to explain 'MSY' for New Orleans?)

thanks! we were thinking....Bands Nashville Airport....most of them dont make any sense...and why do we have to know them all at 90% when we were told that they are avaiable at the computer and it takes seconds to get it........oh well...I want this job...I want my free travel!

The airport was originally named after daredevil aviator John Moisant, who died in an airplane crash on this land (which was devoted to farming at the time) in 1910. The abbreviation MSY was derived from Moisant Stock Yards, as the old airport kept NEW.

Plans for Moisant Field were begun in 1940, as New Orleans' older Shushan Airport – now New Orleans Lakefront Airport (NEW), still serving private and corporate aircraft – was in need of expansion or replacement. With World War II the land became a government air base. It was returned to civilian control after the war, and commercial service began at Moisant Field in May of 1946.

I wonder if there is any other field named after someone who died at that location?

Thanks! I assume there were other reasons for siting the airport there, but I can imagine the thought process: "Gee, if only there'd been a runway here, maybe he wouldn't have crashed!"

Some of those, I know off-hand:
TYS is Knoxville because it's McGhee-TYSon Airport.
PVD=ProViDence
CLT=CharLoTte
and CVG is Cincinnati's airport, which is actually across the river in CoVinGton, KY.

But what jogs my memory about these may be different than what you may find most helpful.
