Can it be done?
Is it possible for me to sit at my computer and earn enough frequent flyer miles and/or hilton honors points to go on a decent vacation without spending outrageous sums of cash on products that I don't really need or want? If so, please help me figure the best way to start racking up the points/miles!

Yes it is "POSSIBLE" if you got the time and are willing to invest it!!
Join all the programs and participate as much and as often as possible.
Freeride
MyPoints
Etour
etc
Have a nice vacation! You'll need it after all that extra work at the keyboard!

brodyman2000, It's possible to earn points/miles/other awards simply by visiting sites such as altavista.com and freeairmiles.com, although there are others sites out there.
Most of these sites limit the number of points that you can earn per day and it will take you some time to accumulate points/miles as a result of this limit.
You should also visit the S.P.A.M. site for alternate programs that offer points/miles with minimal monetary investment.

It can be done - but it will take time. Like you, I do not want to spend money on things I do not need, however, I end up shopping some on the web for things that are cheaper that way or more convient. Some examples - I buy the expensive cat food found only in pet stores. I save a trip to the store and get the same or better price by using one of the .com sites. Both green points and clickrewards have those listed so you get points. Try to think of the stuff you would purchase anyway. With some of the sites offering great discounts (particularly for first time buyers) it works well. I also enrolled for alta vista. Another way to get points at clickrewards which is a bit tedious but entertaining is by answering questions for LookSmartLive. For every five questions you answer you get 100 points. For the first one you get an additional 50 points. Good luck.
