Problems with FlyerTalk

I know Catman's been complaining recently, but this afternoon, as I was about to post a response, FlyerTalk kicked me off & wouldn't let me back on. I had to quit Netscape & restart, & when I came back in it had lost my cookie, so I can't see what I've read & what I haven't.

I'd like to know if anyone else has had problems, or if it's caused by the version of Communicator I'm using (4.5, installed yesterday)

happens may be every fith log-in-time to me - but I thought it was because the software didn't understand my "Schwyzerduetsch".

I'm sure glad someone else started this thread, because I though it was just me having a problem. Same as Rudi...about 1 in 5 logons end up with me being frozen out. It started about 2 weeks ago for me. The above the ad stuff loads OK, but during the loading of the ad stuff at the bottom, when it gets to 59% it just freezes. I have told WebFlyer about the problem but have not heard anything back. Using IE via AOL. Never had this problem before and don't have any other problems with other web sites, just WebFlyer now.

I had the same problem at an Air Canada Maple Leaf lounge in Calgary. It was on Netscape and IBM Global Network. Haven't had any problems with my high speed cable modem and IE4. Judging from the posts it is not browser dependent though.

At a guess I'd say that WebFlyer may be having server problems... Hopefully they'll resolve those & we'll all be zooming around online.

I'd hate to have to switch to IE.

It crashes around 1 in 5 times for me as well in both Netscape on Win95 and Netscape on UNIX so it's not system-dependent either. Generally I can reduce it to 1 in 10 or better by not having any other browser windows open at the same time (But FlyerTalk to too slow to use individually and I like to have several windows running so that I can work on various work/school/leisure stuff at the same time)

- Mac OS 8.1 (will upgrade this weekend to 8.5), memory 56 KB
- Netscape Communicator 4.05 (did download 4.5 but not yet use)
- yes - more open windows = more "freezes" (and often my TV-window is open, running a sports event or CNN)

56 KB of memory? I knew Macs were underpowered, but not by that much *grin*.

(Yeah, yeah, I know, he probably meant 56 Megs of RAM)

Well, I must be really lucky in contrast to most of you - until now I'd only had a bit of slowing down & the standard 'you have tried to hack your way in' response when I want to post something to a thread that someone else is busy on.

Traffic on this site has picked up a lot recently - I count over 60 threads active in The Buzz alone during the last ten days. So maybe Webflyer's having trouble keeping up with server availability/bandwidth.

Beckles - if it weren't so early in the morning I'd start defending Macs. But I'm ambi-computeral (a made up word along the lines of ambidextrous), & still miss the top of the line Thinkpad I had to give back when I finished my last contract. FYI my Mac has 96 megs of RAM...

I find clearing the Netscape (or IE) cache helps speed things up sometimes.

I use both a Pentium machine and a Power Macintosh, both browsers on both machines. The only combination that gives me problems with FlyerTalk is the Pentium with Netscape. When I click to enter FlyerTalk, it shuts down Netscape. This happens one day out of 4 or 5.

I haven't had crashes (Mac G3 running System 8.1 and Motorola Starmax Mac clone running 7.6, both using Netscape 3) but I have had slow response time and the first-page voodoo they warn about.

As for getting a response from E-mails: about 2 months ago I E-mailed them about a blatant typo ("your" for "you" in "So what are your waiting for?") in the FlyerTalk intro page. Not only did I get no response, they haven't fixed it yet!

Efrem - I e-mailed the Webflyer webmaster about a week ago, asking if they could change the HTML slightly so that clicking on the URL for a contributer's homepage would open a new window (instead of opening in the tiny info window, which has no menubar etc). They wrote back promptly, & promised to have it fixed as soon as possible - they hoped to get it done within a week (but haven't yet) - I suspect that they have had server problems on their minds since then.
