I assume the deposited funds have to languish in an E*Trade account for 6+ months, correct?

Cheers.

For plenty of opinions on working with ETRADE to get miles, see various threads from last summer/fall regarding the similar United/ETRADE promotion. (Sorry, don't have the links off hand, but try search.)

My personal experience (and if I remember correctly, others shared my misfortune) is that I'm still waiting for my 10,000 miles to get credited, many months after the 6-8 weeks have passed. I've exchanged many emails - and have faith that they will get posted - it's just an aggrevation at the moment.

"Languishing" is a little extreme - you DO earn interest in their money market. And check the fine print - I found I didn't have to keep my full initial deposit around for 6 months, just have my account still be open and "active" after 6 months.

Has anyone had more luck (in terms of speed in posting) getting the bonus in Clickmiles and converting them?

don't want to wait,
Charles

E*Trade's Offer Creates Some Confusion
Among Frequent Fliers, Tina Turner Fans
By JANE COSTELLO
THE WALL STREET JOURNAL INTERACTIVE EDITION

Delta Air Lines and United Airlines frequent fliers can turn money into miles by opening an account with E*Trade. But United fliers may find it easier to spend an evening with Tina Turner than to sign up for the miles offer.

E*Trade Group, an online broker based in Menlo Park, Calif., is promoting the new Delta offer on the front page of its Web site; the same deal that has been available to United Mileage Plus members for the past year. E*Trade will award 5,000 frequent-flier miles to Delta or United members who open a qualifying E*Trade brokerage account with a balance of at least $1,000. Those who deposit $10,000 will receive 10,000 bonus miles, while those who open an account worth $50,000 will earn 25,000 bonus miles.

But there's no link to sign up for the United offer on the E*Trade home page. Instead, E*Trade promotes a different non-cash incentive to open an account: two free tickets to a concert by rock legend Tina Turner.

E*Trade Customers May Lose Out on United Frequent-Flier Mileage (June 21, 1999)

This isn't the first time fliers have experienced frustrations trying to take advantage of an E*Trade offer. Last spring, some customers had difficulty locating the United bonus on its Web site because E*Trade rotated its promotional offers on different Web servers. Customers who were lucky enough to surf in on the right one were able to click to the United offer, while others were instead given the chance to sign up for a subscription to America Online.

This year, United fliers are forced to log off and call E*Trade directly in order to find out about the program. Even then, it's hard to nail down a correct answer.

Don Timm, a Mileage Plus Premier member and E*Trade account holder, says he has spent the past week trying to determine if the Mileage Plus offer still exists. He thought the offer expired on March 31, but an ad for E*Trade in the current United in-flight magazine gives an expiration date of Feb. 29. When Mr. Timm called the E*Trade toll-free number last week, he was told the offer had ended on Jan. 31.

Mr. Timm sent an e-mail to E*Trade, but to date he's received no reply. "It's quite frustrating," he says. "I've sent an e-mail, but have received absolutely no reply. This is not good PR!"

A spokesperson for E*Trade was dismayed to learn that callers were being told that the United offer has ended.

"This is definitely an ongoing promotion," says E*Trade spokesperson, Heather Fondo. "There is no expiration date." Ms. Fondo says that the reason there is no link to the United offer on the home page is because E*Trade has chosen to promote through direct mail instead.

A spokesman for United said that the ad in the in-flight magazine featuring the Feb. 29 date was printed before the decision was made to indefinitely extend the life of the promotion.

Fliers who are interested in signing up for the United offer can find it through a link at the United Web site, or by typing in www.etrade.com/offer and entering code 585. Mileage Plus members can also enroll by calling the E*Trade toll free number, or via the in-flight GTE Air-fone.

The Delta SkyMiles offer is highlighted on the E*Trade home page, right after the plug for the Tina Turner tickets. The link enables customers to sign up for an account on the site.

Unfortunately those who skip over the E*Trade home page and follow the URL listed in Delta's newsletter, www.etrade.com/offer, are told they should call (800) E*Trade-1 and mention the SkyMiles offer in order to enroll. But that isn't the case: SkyMiles members who ignore the warning in red letters and enter the "special offer code," GZR, arrive at the online-enrollment form.

Account holders must maintain the minimum opening funding in all E*Trade accounts (less trading losses) for at least six months in order to receive the miles, although the bonuses are awarded within eight weeks of enrollment. E*Trade has the right to rescind the mileage if an account balance falls below the minimum, but passengers may still catch a break from the airline.

"Any decisions to pull back mileage are dealt with on a case-by-case basis," says United spokesman, Kurt Ebenhoch.

And while frequent fliers from both programs may rest easier knowing that E*Trade offers carry no expiration date, Tina Turner fans don't have that same luxury. Those who opt for concert tickets will find that the dates to sign up for tickets have expired for all but three of the 24 concerts -- and those three expire Thursday.
