Top Travel Web Sites

Hello web-savy friends:

Do you want to share with the rest of us your favorite travel related websites?

Flyertalk has been an excellent resources for me. I found I have a difficult time to track most websites except through E-mail news. I would have no time to check the news posted on the Expedia (www.expedia.com), Previewtravel (www.previewtravel.com), travelocity (www.travelocity.com), CNN travel or USA today travel section.

Well, sure.

My all around favorite is 1travel.com. Their site is reasonably fast, they have a lot of consolidator and discount fares, and it is easy to book tickets.

ITN is best for their "expert" mode which gives number of seats avail for each fare basis, etc., but ITN is slow and unwieldy otherwise.

But those are my two favorites. Of the airlines, I like AA's site, although it is like all airline sites a bit awkward to use and prone to bugs and errors.

I like hotelwiz.com for hotel bookings. I have found that site (part of 1travel.com I might add) has good US domestic rates, is easy to use and convenient. I have invariably booked the lowest rates there and never had a problem.

I just checked the http://www.hotelwiz.com site for a Las Vegas stay in early Dec. It gave min, max and average nightly rates for Dec 1, 1999. A few of the avg rates are shown below:

Bellagio $406.52
Caesars 373.15
Residence Inn 366.86

Econolodge 303.01
Rodeway 301.20
Days Inn 373.00

Unless a recent tremendous demand for the latter 3 properties bumped up their avg rates, I would suggest a second rate opinion by a totally independent source.

You never know....

In all seriousness, I had the Red Roof Inn at the Miami Airport try to charge me almost that much for a trip which falls over New Year's this year! Many hotels there are raising their rates literally by $200/night (I arrive on the 29th) for the eve of the 31st.

I too was surprised at the cost for a few days, so I checked the following single date (1 room, 1 day, 1 person):
Arriv 11-30-1999
Depart 12-1-1999
and that is what was posted above.

Travelocity and Expedia rates are lower but neither have the Rio Suites. Any suggestions anyone?

MisterNice, that's why I always tell people you need to check as many sources as possible. A quick check of the Mirage's website shows a rate of $99 available for November 30th.

You also may want to consider either Priceline or Expedia's Hotel Price Matcher. If you're successful, please post about it at the site I set up to discuss bidding at http://clubs.yahoo.com/clubs/pricelinedeals

For hotel rates in Vegas, I've used http://www.lvrs.com several times. They have excellent rates. Examples for rates 11/30-12/1:
Bellagio $125
Mirage $75
Rio Suites $55

They also have a link for hotels outside of Vegas: http://www.travelscape.com

LR- Thanks for the good tip. Http://www.lvrs.com prices are indeed slightly better than I booked, but it did not have the necessary weekend rates. Will definitely bookmark the site though. I used http://www.travelnow.com because it had both weekday and weekend prices for the Rio Suites.

Sheryl- Thanks for the information and a suggestion for you. If possible in the future, I would prefer if you did not include advertisements for your "club" in a post that includes my nice name. It seems to imply endorsement, and I certainly do not endorse it.

I think the "Brand X" concept of buying "Flights and Nights" is silly and counter-productive to both my FF mileage and my hotel points balances.

Travelscape/LVRS is a HUGE hotel consolidator specializing in Las Vegas. They have great rates which they guarantee and are always offering some sort of rebate.
