No Continental stories, huh?
On an award seat with my family down in PBI over 1999 spring break, we were returning on the last day of the break before school - Sunday, on an 8 am flight, fully prepared to play the bumping game.
8 am flight overbooked (by about 25), offered $500 per person regardless. Took it. Agent agreed to overbook us on the 10 am flight. (500 x 4 = $2000)
10 am flight over booked by 10, offered $400 p/p and took it. Rebooked for the next day @ noon. (400 x 4 = $1600)
Decided to see other earning ops available, so I dragged everyone to the ticket counter. Told agent our sob story about how we were bumped. She felt bad, so she gave us boarding passes for the 3 pm flight and passes to US Airways club.
Felt $3600 was enough, so we boarded the 3 pm flight and went back to EWR.
Used vouchers for flights to Cancun this December, with $1600 left.

They fudged the numbers! I was once on a Brazilian made Embraer Brasilia where the agent boarded the plane and asked for volunteers because of a weight restriction. No one volunteered despite several announcements. Finally, the pilot announced that they recalculated the weight and were taking off. Several people remarked that they wished they had volunteered because they were now afraid the plane would crash from being too heavy!
