(if your looking for a place to donate children mags to: http://hugslove.org/ )

Shimon Nov 24, 2013 1:55 am

I do.

alpen1 Nov 24, 2013 4:29 am

Anyone have experience subscribing to a bunch of mags then cancelling the ones you don't like/want after the miles post and getting refund for remaining issues? Do they pull the miles 6 months later?

There's a few that the mrs. thinks she wants but I don't want to subscribe to 10 magazines and find out she only likes a couple.

claurianta2 Nov 24, 2013 7:28 am

At this rate it almost makes sense to just subscribe to a gazillion magazines... 1.7 cpm is a good deal.

JudyJFLA Nov 24, 2013 7:39 am

If you have too many subs, you can send them my way, and I will get them to the VA hospital and clinic on all my appointments. A lot of wait time there, and I always re-read those ones from last year. This week I found out the poll numbers for the upcoming election, Romney is a bit behind!!

Cheers!

I think your subscriptions are eligible for auto-renew but you can cancel at any time.

Yes, exactly my concern, also. Immediately after doing checkout, I delelted my cc info. As soon as my new sub shows up, I will telephone/online make sure it's cancelled.

I know that I'm going to be bombarded with repeated renewal begging before sub expires but that's okay. '

Still can't believe it's 60 miles per $1 spend.

After placing your order or anytime prior to the auto-renew date, you can go into your account information online (requires opening an account with Magazines.com prior to or when placing order) and turning off auto-renew.

I've used magazines.com several times (@30 miles/$ via UR). I believe it IS set to auto-renew, but it is fairly straight forward to cancel that "benefit." As others have said, make sure to delete your credit info so you don't get auto-billed.

The stranger thing that has happened since I started subscribing via Magazines.com is that I routinely get "trial" subscriptions to magazines I would never subscribe to. GQ, Money, and Us Weekly all come to mind. The funny think is that GQ and Money came to my (female, and much less financially savvy) fiancé, while US Weekly came to me (a male, who is very out of touch and disinterested in celebrity gossip). I would worried I would eventually start receiving bills for these - but I never have.

Simply use a CC that's not going to be around next year. All of us should have plenty to choose from, his is FT after all!

horseymen Nov 24, 2013 3:23 pm

So what charities can you send magazines directly to as a charitable contribution?

So who won? :D

Seriously, is this a serious offer to distribute magazines to VA institutions? If so, could you provide a bit more info on what you do that takes you on your appointments? I don't mean to pry, but I'd seriously consider such de facto donations. Send a pm if you prefer.

rufflesinc Nov 24, 2013 4:54 pm

The fine print on the page before you get sent to magazines.com doesn't address this, do you get points for the taxes? For CC spend you do, but my experience in the UR portal says no.

horseymen Nov 24, 2013 5:06 pm

Any tax experts on the tax deductibility of sending magazines to Judy to distribute to the VA? :)

What taxes? Just placed an order for a 2-year subscription for $29.95, no tax charged.

Wish they had the New York Times or something, I think I'm going to get the $100 Economist sub... And 6k miles. Not bad and good reading material

horseymen Nov 24, 2013 8:32 pm

Okay - I'll guineapig this.

In for $1305 to the Los Angeles Children's Hospital, using a private browser and the portal.

Benefits: They say cancel at anytime and get a refund of unused issues. Fairly safe risk if you have to cancel 3 months in and then prorate the deduction. Should be well settled before tax time.

Risks: Everything people say about Cartera.

But won't it be fishy canceling $1300 worth of magazine subs? Most expensive I saw was the ~$100 economist.

DC777Fan Nov 24, 2013 8:56 pm

is there an expiration on the deal? i'd love to run by the childrens hospital here to confirm they'd like the donation but I don't want to wait past midnight if it's just a 1 day deal!

I only plan on doing it if they don't honor the AA miles, and I'll give them a chance to rectify it before I do. It's just a fail safe. I did People x 5, Sports Illustrated x 5 and US Weekly x 5

+1

I'll be doing it purely for the miles. Happy to donate the magazine subscriptions to a worthy cause.

oceangirl Nov 24, 2013 9:31 pm

Thanks OP!

I'm in for a bunch of random subs to send to the troops PLUS 10.5k pts

Happy Thanksgiving y'all

philemer Nov 24, 2013 9:36 pm

mommypoints did a good write-up on her blog. Not sure I can use a couple thousand AA but will research.

My Spirit MasterCard with BofA has ShopSafe, which generates virtual card numbers with a limit and expiration date you can set. Comes in very handy for things like this.

How long would the miles take to post to AA?

peachy3 Nov 24, 2013 10:19 pm

I'm in for $1k worth of mags to the children's hospital~

I don't specifically remember, but it did post in a reasonable amount of time and I did not have to follow up. Remember though, posting time generally has as much to do with the portal than it does with the merchant (and my prior purchases were through UR).

RustyC Nov 24, 2013 10:56 pm

I'm in for $44 worth to top up to an award level. Thanks to OP. Came at the right time because I don't have travel opportunities coming up for rental car miles (AA not being my primary airline). Better to have the option to book the big trip sooner rather than later, and this beats purchasing miles.

I took this to mean that the recurring charges would not qualify and that only your initial subscription charge would get the bonus miles.

yerffej201 Nov 24, 2013 11:58 pm

Economist is not automatically renewed.
Any other good options for magazines that are not automatically renewed?
