35 points/$ eBags AAdvantage Mall

35 points/$ eBags AAdvantage Mall through October 14
Short term crazy high bonus on eBags purchases. If you were waiting to buy something on the site, now is a good holiday weekend to do it.

xiKiNGix Oct 13, 2013 5:22 pm

I'm still waiting to receive my 20x+ bonus from eBags from a couple of months ago, freaking Cartera...

35 points/$ eBags AAdvantage Mall

Sadly it looks like everything on ebags is WAY overpriced compared to Amazon. I suppose at 35mi/$ that makes up for the difference, but t doesn't put it into the category of buying something I don't need...

Agreed. Buy only what you were seriously thinking of buying anyway. I see 35 miles per dollar as ~50 cents per dollar, assuming a conservative 1.5 cents per AA mile. 50% off ain't a bad deal.

Certain luggage brands (like Tumi, Briggs & Riley) are rarely discounted. Are there any brand restrictions on the 35 miles/$1 promotion? If not, then this is a great opportunity to buy some higher-end luggage.

eBags.com 35x via AAdvantage eShopping

I believe this ends tomorrow, 10/14. eBags.com offering 35x when you get there via the AAdvantage eShopping portal.

Shop carefully as not everything is a deal at eBags! I spent $605 on a few pieces I was buying anyway, and will earn 21,780 AAdvantage miles (35x from eBags, 1x from Citi).

josephstern Oct 13, 2013 9:49 pm

Probably unwisely, I bought something there a few weeks ago. Haven't used it yet.

Free return shipping, so I'm returning and reordering.

I say 'unwisely' because any store that can offer this type of bonus basically has to have a huge margin.

KennyBSAT Oct 13, 2013 9:59 pm

I bought a couple of these recently - checked price for comparison and ebags is $10 higher than Amazon and others. $10 for 4060 miles is not too bad, and not that ridiculous of a margin. http://www.ebags.com/product/high-si...-straps/221656

Yep I bought a beautiful bag I had my eyes on. $425.00
Should be getting 14,200ish AA miles, 23.00 worth of ebags for future purchases and hopefully 5% rebate on my Discover card. No taxes or shipping.

The key is to know the product and the retail value somewhere else. Usually the brands you mentioned are the same price everywhere else. Here in FL we have a Tumi outlet but it has old merchandise and you have to pay taxes.

Took screenshot of everything !

(Rimowa is the only brand excluded)

Tumi isn't "rarely" discounted. It's discounted (at my last count) around 6 times per year, the past 2 years. Try gilt.com or ruelala.com. Also, if you're fortunate enough to live near a Tumi outlet, you'll find tons of product at 50% off or more.

Never used a B&R bag so can't comment there.

Re: the 35 cent per dollar spent on eBags..it CAN be worth it, if: (1) you have a specific redemption in mind, or need a top off, or can't apply for another Citi card ;) AND (2) you actually need (two) new Tumis!

artemis Oct 14, 2013 6:18 am

I took advantage of this promotion to pick up a new Eagle Creek rolling duffel and a new JanSport daypack. I desperately hope the 35x points post, but if they don't at least I will have some quality luggage to show for my efforts (plus the regular FF miles I get from using my AAdvantage credit card).

Why are shopping portals so unreliable when it comes to posting points? It's a real disincentive to using them. Customers shouldn't need screenshots, etc., in order to get the points they've earned. The current portal should work reliably, or the airline/credit card program should jettison it in favor of another one which does.

Thanks. I've occasionally seen Tumi discounted by 20% on selected styles. Have the sales you've seen been for the entire line?

Not only that, but it doesn't even have as good a selection as Amazon has! :td: I've been thinking of buying this Case Logic 14" Security Friendly Laptop Case on Amazon (and so have it "bookmarked" on my Wish List there), looked for it every which way at eBags (including browsing through all Case Logic as well as all Security Friendly), and it's simply not there at any price:

I bought the Jansport Driver 8 for $72 (20% backpack discount) and it was cheaper than Amazon. :D

tev9999 Oct 14, 2013 1:40 pm

I have also noticed that ebags discounts will vary based on what portal you enter through. I was looking for something one time and going straight to ebags offered, say, a 20% discount. When I linked through Fatwallet (which offers fat-cash), it was only 15%. (I don't recall exact numbers, but you get the idea).

emeraldtx Oct 14, 2013 3:15 pm

You need to watch the ebags miles-promos too... they do a sneaky thing with prices being different if you don't go through the portal. I was getting something with a bonus miles promo last year, and I happened to pull up their website in another browser without the portal on, and there was a 20% site-wide sale. This disappeared when going through the portal! ymmv, buyer beware, and all that jazz. That said, I'm in love with their packing cubes.

To answer questions about Tumi: yes Tumi has 20% (or more !) every now and then, and if you love Tumi items like I do, sometimes this can be a a bargain. But the sale just includes last year's models (who cares right?) and you have to pay taxes if the store has a local store where you live.

We have a Tumi outlet nearby and one in Orlando and they are OK but not the greatest place. Some of the items are not as discounted as we expect them to be. I believe that the "outlet" sign can be deceptive some times. And you have to pay taxes which can add up. ( and no extra miles thru portals)

Ruelala, Gilt, Belle&Clive, even Macys can have some bargains but you have to act quickly, inventory is small.

Ebay, hmm too many Chinese knock off here and there.

Yesterday, I got the item I wanted ( Ducati line ) and the price was OK. That and the freebies. :D

PS Northface at Ebags is way overpriced !

bdesmond Oct 14, 2013 4:08 pm

When others do this, does the deal banner across the top of the eBags site tell you that you'll get the 35X AA miles? I read in one of the blog comments folks were seeing that.

I just see "FREE SHIPPING on orders over $25 + at least 5% EBAGS REWARDS on every order" when I click through from the AA shopping mall.

glennaa11 Oct 14, 2013 4:15 pm

The real value in ebags is their own line of products. Those are typically priced quite well compared to the big brands. And their luggage is well-designed and durable.

alpen1 Oct 14, 2013 4:15 pm

I rolled the dice on 4 tumis + some stuff I actually need...let's see what the ebay world has in store for my tegra lites

zceuxbhjutf Oct 14, 2013 4:48 pm

Don't mind me, I thought maybe I could get a new sleeping bag there, but re tev9999's post ShopDiscover does this too. The card's Q4 5% bonus category is online merchants, well, ShopDiscover went from 10% cashback 30 September to 5% the next day for their best partners.

drdavidge Oct 14, 2013 8:52 pm

Any idea how to remove the promo code that gets automatically added to your cart upon checkout?

lkar Oct 14, 2013 8:54 pm

I've been wanting a second TLS Weekender convertible, and the price was $72 going through the aa mall. It put in a promo code which perhaps will screw with the 35 miles, but at $72 for a bag I wanted, if I get an extra 2000 miles for the purchase it will be great. I hate messing with Cartera other than for modest purchases, but I love ebags stuff.

superflush Oct 14, 2013 11:08 pm

Looks like the deal ended at midnight. I wonder if we'll see eBags pop up on another portal soon.

rufflesinc Oct 21, 2013 12:36 pm

has anyone had their miles post yet?

artemis Oct 21, 2013 12:42 pm

Nope. Heck, I'm still waiting for my 2,000 AAdvantage miles from that targeted email promo in early September to post. When I log into the AAdvantage eShopping portal, my account shows "no activity" no matter how far back I search. I'm very afraid that something went wrong with each of my portal purchases (one from Travelsmith in September, and two as part of the eBags 35x point promotion), and I'm going to get nothing. *cries*

At least I got a good rolling duffel and a nice daypack from the deal, though, even if all I get is 1x AAdvantage points through my credit card. At least my Citibank card works reliably, even if the portal doesn't!

rufflesinc Oct 21, 2013 12:49 pm

I ordered over $11k of bags and sunglasses. You can bet I'm returning every item if it doesn't post within 60 day return window. This is my first time using AA portal (I normally use Chase UR portal).

DC777Fan Oct 21, 2013 12:54 pm

not even pending yet ... my guess is they had more orders than expected and given the high multiplier they are manually auditing every order

OTOH, they could also be waiting for the 60 day return period to expire, so they don't have to keep track of returns thinking some folks might return items once the miles post...

rufflesinc Oct 21, 2013 1:05 pm

They already audited my order by putting it on hold until they spoke to me by phone.

Chase UR portal is pretty good at clawbacks:

06/16/2013 07/15/2013 Online Return Ann Taylor ORDER # 922192XXX ($444.99) ($444.99) -890 Points
06/16/2013 06/19/2013 Online Purchase Ann Taylor ORDER # 922192XXX $444.99 $444.99 890 Points
If AA portal didn't clawback, I'd imagine people would have exploited that already.

That was most likely a fraud department audit to confirm they weren't about to ship out $11k in merchandise that they would not be compensated for if your card was the victim of fraud. That department doesn't audit orders for bonus points in most cases with most companies, and even if they did, they likely wouldn't do it at the time of ordering.

Yes they are and Cartera manages both portals, but they also don't offer 35X very often... Goofing up on a 4X order isn't usually a big deal ... 35X could be pretty bad.

rufflesinc Oct 21, 2013 1:08 pm

So any other suggestion as to what to do if nothing happens close to the 60 day mark?

josephstern Oct 21, 2013 1:12 pm

I'm willing to bet that no one is getting miles until the return period is over. That seems reasonable to me. But I'd like to see them pending in the meantime.

I know that with Cartera, that's asking a lot.

I also know that I went in on this one knowing it was with Cartera, so I'll take it slow. If it was any other company, I'd have gone in right away. Cartera gave me significant pause.

Paiteaw Oct 21, 2013 2:11 pm

My qualifying purchase at one of the online portal merchants needed to be partially returned. They did reclaim the exact amount of miles based on the actual amount returned.

two_scoops Oct 21, 2013 4:35 pm

I ordered a 3 piece Samsonite set for a good price and I thought I had 9,000 miles coming my way. Ebags emailed me to say the item is no longer in stock and my order is cancelled :(

jasonq Oct 21, 2013 4:47 pm

Just out of curiosity, how long does it take for those post on your AA mall page? I bought a Samsonite suitcase while it was 35 cents per dollar and it still haven't shown up on my account yet(not even in pending status).

joetro Oct 21, 2013 4:56 pm

Made a cheap purchase and haven't gotten the points yet either. Ugh, so slow.

roneyc Oct 22, 2013 4:40 am

Ditto to above. This was my first non-UR portal purchase - should have read the posts before committing. Oh well....got a decent set of spinner luggage at about 20% less than Amazon price. I'll just sit tight waiting for the activity to at least show "pending". I wonder if purchasing with a non-registered card makes any difference, although AADvantage message clearly says that is no longer a requirement so long as you're logged into the portal under your AAdvantage number.

sfmom Oct 22, 2013 5:10 am

I contacted eBags and they confirmed my purchase qualified for the points. This is what they said:

We have received an update from our marketing team and they confirmed
that your order is eligible for AA miles. American states that it
typically take 30 days to award miles, but can take up to 8 weeks.

If the points don't post in eight weeks I will definitely bug them. Between this, a big FTD order I did for a wedding and a North Face order I'm owed almost 40,000 points, so I am tracking all three closely. So far I haven't had trouble with points posting, but they weren't for such large amounts.
