The way to get from Vienna to Bratislava is boat down the Danube. They are set up for day trips. As mentioned, it doesn't take long to see Bratislava.
As for signs/menus, I agree the language is very different, but absolutely everything is spelled phonetically, with no exceptions. Once you learn the alphabet, you can pronounce anything written. Remember, accent/emphasis is always on the first syllable - really hammer it.
There is an old podcast in the Apple store to learn Hungarian. There were only about 10 episodes, but it will teach you practically everything you need to know as a tourist.
