Since it looks like US DM and AA are combining their mileage programs next one, anyone else converting their Aeroplan miles to US?

I'm converting 100K AP for 82K US miles... CX/JL to Asia without YQ. :)

I already converted 100K AP to 84K USDM last month

Certainly didn't expect such quick merge (March 2015), but now I have to study AA programs and its sweet spots also.... after using up my Alaska miles, AA left for CX

I've been looking at this type of transfer for some time but just can't get my head around it. I know everyone has different redemption situations, but with my 100,000 AP points I just need another 50,000 points (easy with an Amex transfer) and I have myself a business mini-RTW on Star Alliance with two stopovers. Granted I'd rather return to Toronto in a business CX seat but having experienced business Eva Air TPE-YYZ I was thoroughly impressed. Heck, I would even work my way home trying out ANA or Asiana if the surcharge isn't too high.

Is this type of conversion a good thing any more?

I think it's only for people with EXTRA Aeroplan miles to convert. I do it to diversify, just as I collect BA Avios and Alaska miles, just in case *A options don't work out.
e.g. I redeemed Avios for CX YYZ-HKG 2Y, Alaska Miles (50K one-way) for YYZ-HKG 1J for upcoming summer because *A options aren't good (ie. no EVA TPAC space at all)


Otherwise, you have to do your own calculation on whether Aeroplan vs. AA is worth the transfer

+1 for this question. I believe its through points.com but there's a trick involving claiming a US address on your Aeroplan account? Can someone clarify?

Points.com - I just changed my address on the account there and that was it.

Change your address to US

Exchange via Points.com, should be 100 AP to 84 USDM (50K Aeroplan max per transfer, 100K max per year)

our family has already converted 380K aeros to US this year. close to 600 K last year, and more to come. AA miles are so great for premium F redemptions, not to mention no YQ. you take a 16-20% hit, but that's easily made up in no YQ. it's also the last chance to do it, so i'd suggest taking advantage of it now...

It's actually a better value to use on AA - considering 67.5K to Asia in F equals out to about 80K Aeroplan, but the added bonus is no YQ and no change fees for dates. Contrast that 105K redeemed through Aeroplan and YQ on many decent carriers. So the 16% haircut still puts you out on top (I've even taken a 30% haircut through Esso and Avion and still found it a bargain - I've saved a ton on lack of change fees.)

They didn't enforce 100k per annual year cap on you?

Sure, but we have multiple family members and we did this in 2014 and now in 2015.

Let's face it, it's the only redemption on points.com that's worth it!

I've held my current BMO credit account for about 25 years now.

BMO World Elite - 2012 - 2013 (FYF, +$350 travel + 4 lounge passes)
BMO Rewards - 2013 - 2014 ($35 AF - to keep leftover rewards to spend)
BMO Preferred Rate MC - 2014-2015 (No fee + 11% interest)
BMO Air Miles MC - 2015 (no fee + 500 Airmiles)

I am hoping to go back up to a BMO World Elite next year if they have a FYF promo.

I think whether or not I get the bonus depends on how far back their card history goes.
