I've read the idea and it would involve quit a bit of work and $ for the potential payoff.

Sorry have to disagree with you there. More experienced members look at this as a long term game with regards to spending and cc bonuses. You see many "newbies" go for 10 cards in 2 months or 300k miles as above. Obviously there are exceptions to each case but on average that's the setup.
