I look at US as fulfilling exactly one need for me: long-haul partner awards in J.
They block not only LH F but a couple of the other good *A F products out there. They are a *royal* pain in the a** to redeem simple domestic awards on US metal. Only high season awards available for MCI-SYR/ITH/ROC/ALB/etc. in freaking February?
Really?!?
Two things I like about US though:
(1) Inflight experience is pretty good for a low- to mid-tier (Silver/Gold) out of MCI. Better than low/mid elite on anything else.
(2) They haven't blocked any of my J awards, such as the aforementioned HKG/NRT. United would have issued the same award online for 120,000 miles. US requires a phone call, but charges no phone fees and issues it for 90,000 miles.
Problem is that I do love LH F, so when US and AA merge and the combined entity goes to Oneworld, it won't kill me to move more of my activity back to United.
