OK, so that is also good to know. I currently have 2 first class tix on hold until tomorrow night. I was going to release them, and book them separately (my wife has AA mile we also want to use), but I guess I will call AA so that they don't go back to Qantas, or become otherwise unavailable. Hopefully, the agent/rep won't mess that up.
So that gets me home to California, now I just have to figure out the best seats I can get going to SYD. Its looking like I will be on the Hawaiian Air flight via HNL. Is it true you can do a stopover on this route? It looks like, either way from LAX I have to spend the night, but if I can I'd stopover and spend 2-3 days in Hawaii.
Thanks again all

With AA one-way stopover rules, you can stop in the North American gateway city (the city from which you leave or enter the NA region). In this case, the city is HNL. You should be able to search on the AA website using multi-city dates on the home-HNL segment and HNL-SYD segment and, if you choose the exact same type of award for both segments, it should price the same as just LAX-SYD.
