Possible to acquire points for check transaction?

I'm making a semi-major purchase ($5000-10000) and the vendor only accepts cash/checks. I want to acquire some Chase UR points or AMEX points, if at all possible. Two thoughts come to mind:

1. Have the credit card company cut a check to this vendor for the amount.
2. Purchase traveler cheques.

Would either of these options work, or would they be categorized as a "cash advance" transaction? Anything else I'm not thinking of?

Cash advance on the first option , don't think you can purchase travelers checks with a credit card , also if I recall correctly the highest amount is $100 so you will need to buy a lot of them for 10k

Earning miles or points using a credit card to buy money orders or travelers cheques is something that should not work, but may. Useful information is on Flyertalk, but it is dispersed and you will need to spend some time investigating and testing with the understanding that it may not work. There is no recipe book, and you may not have sufficient time to make it work for this specific transaction.

Start with this discussion from 2010, for background information:

Capital One advertises small business rewards banking on the radio a lot... I've never looked into it, but they claim to offer rewards on check transactions and check card (less unusual) transactions

It's automatic - here's how rewards can add up:
Up to 20 miles for each business debit card purchase
20 miles for paying bills online
10 miles for checks or withdrawals

Easy-to-Earn BONUS miles:
1,000 miles for opening your account
1,000 miles for your first debit transaction
1,000 miles on your first account anniversary
5,000 miles for opening a personal Rewards Checking account and using direct deposit

Didn't AMEX put a stop on the TC's scheme?

I thought the whole community moaned the demise of the AMEX TC scheme at least 18 or 24 months ago.
