US Mint is taking another shot at getting the unpopular coins into circulation. After a successful campaign in 2009, during which over $2 billion of coins were sold, the mint backtracked on a plan to ship coins at face value.
According to Spokesperson Michael White, "The US Mint has determined that The Presidential $1 Coin Act requires that we continue to make the coins available at face value and put forth a "best efforts attempt" to distribute them. Nevertheless, we are aware that there are those who have purchased the coins without any intent to spend them. Thus, we are establishing a 0.5% fee to purchase coins with credit cards. We regret the inconvenience caused by a few customers."
