Timing to gain and transfer points?

Hey Everyone...I want to take a trip to Addis, Ethiopia with a stop over in europe on January 28. I want to get as many points/miles as I can and transfer them. How long should I wait before I do transfer and purchase? Any recommendations of how I should go about the process of gaining these miles/points for the trip?

I dont have an airline/aliance in mind? I have 53,000 ba miles so I thought that would be a good place to start with one world and use jordanian airlines to get to Addis. What do you think about that?

I also have: Amex delta sky miles with no points left,
Amex Jetblue with 14,000
Master card citi premier pass with 0 miles

not sure if I should cancel the two with 0 points so I can get new ones.

I will start in jfk. I would like to stop over in Istanbul if possible. Otherwise anywhere else in europe would be fine too. It will be a return trip back to JFK March 5. I would like to stopover anywhere else on the return trip for a couple of days. Thank you for responding.

Is it January 2012 or 2013?

If it's for 2012, you have to make sure you would have accumulated enough miles or points for this award trip you are planning very SOON. You only have 4 months left and the award seats may not be available by the time you get enough miles.

Didn't you just ask the same questions in another thread?

Here on FT, cross-posting isn't encouraged. Better use different threads to ask different questions.

It is for 2012. Ok then I beter get busy. I thought I had more time to do so. When do you think is the latst date to book?

The other thread was more about the credit cards, this one was about the proccess of how to gain points. Sorry if this is not allowed, I dont want to be disrespectful. I was trying to get 2 different answers. Thank you for the heads-up

have you priced the trip to find tthe lowest fare in case there are no awards?

using a site like expedia would give you a basis for the options, no stops, 1 out, i back, 1 each way....i saw a $1700 rt w/no stops....
