An E170 isn't really a regional jet though, and has a higher F:Y ratio than the A319s.

You're right; corrected.

Who knows how long 757s will last on that route. Wouldn't be at all surprised to see CO 738s being shifted into the mix, etc.

But maybe that time horizon doesn't really matter to the OP's decision.

I've been flying BOS-ORD every week since September and I've had good experience with United. As mentioned, United's E+ is a great benefit for lower elites. Traveling as 1P, you will likely never get upgraded on a Monday or Thursday flight, but on Fridays you're closer on the list, and the couple times I travelled on Saturdays I was upgraded.

The E170 is a very comfortable plane. It just doesn't have any audio or video.
