what is the best way to trade / transfer miles. points.com is almost discouraging given the fees they charge.
any other site for peep to peer transfer without a middleman.

That would depend on the specific program that you want to transfer miles into/out of.
http://www.webflyer.com/programs/mileage_converter/ is a good starting point.
Hilton does offer conversions at varying rates (much better than points.com). You do have to pay for it though.
