CC spend for the folks with stuff

Ok, life has been good. My wife and I have most of the toys already... as far as most mid-income Americans enjoy. We still have a mortgage, but not a lot of other stuff we want to buy... or really need. Where do I do my spend? Is it ok to pay taxes on your card and not get hit as a cash advance?

Taxes will count as a purchase, although usually there is at least a 2% fee imposed by the gov agency.

Another "spend" is finding a few charities that speak to you, and setting up regular gifts to your card. Pays forward the "life is good," while reducing the taxes

I also have problems with some of these minimum spends, especially the $5,000 or $10,000 ones like the Amex SPG or Chase United Explorer.

I do plan on paying my taxes with a CC, even with the 2-3% hit it's still worthwhile to meet minimum spends.

Cost of living things? Supermarkets, household goods, vacations, gas, food, clothes?

Pay for everything you can using cc's. Coffee at McDonalds, doctor co-pays, utility bills, etc. You'll be amazed at what your monthly spend can be when you start putting every purchase you can on a card.

My long lost and recently discovered uncle in Nigeria writes you can send your credit card numbers to him and he will solve all your spending needs. And he has $1 million dollars he can deposit in your account if you give him all your bank numbers. I forgot his email address but I am sure he will write me again...

what credit card to use for $6000 in expenses this weekend?

Hello everyone. This weekend I am going to have to charge $6000 for a birthday party for myself. I could:
- use my AA Visa, which is offering a 50% bonus through Nov. 30th
- use my Diners Club/Master Card, which offers a great deal of flexibility
- use my Hilton HHonors Visa (I've been trying to get to $20,000 for Gold status, and probably won't make it without these charges)
- use my BA Visa (but I already have over 100,000 miles thanks to the bonus promotion and no plans to use them)
- use my Marriott Visa (but just Marriott points alone don't seem to outweigh these other options).

Advice? Judy

Think its more than gov't. Gas stations by me have separate cash and credit card prices.

Its' important to control expenditure, and ensure that any spend is paid for in full at the end of the month.. otherwise, yes you get miles, but revolving credit interest will eat the cardholder alive..
