Actually the best rtw's are not called rtw's but are "over both ponds" routings. Flying to a destination with stopovers and returning by going on the same direction. ex: US to India over Atlantic, return India to US over Pacific with many segments and stopovers.
There's a current story on pointsguy.com about this entitled "Using US Air Miles to Book International Star Alliance Trips" He also has several other stories on using other US airlines the same way.

From recent postings I've been told to look at AC as one key source for possible "mini-rtw" at reasonable amounts of points and also about the "over two ponds" routes. I would also suggest looking under the three forums for world alliances here in FT for ideas about how to combine different airlines within one alliance (OW, ST, #Alliance) in putting together a RTW award. Good luck.
