Points.com [Consolidated]

Hi all. I was wondering if anyone has some experience with points.com. I have points with all their affiliates and want to cash them in as I am not traveling any more. Does Point.con have a good or bad reputation in the community and is it a good deal? If their reputation is bad can anyone recommend another site where I can merge points? Thanks

Cholula Aug 24, 2009 9:27 am

We're moving this to MilesBuzz! where it's perhaps more apropos.

Please follow at its new home.

Thanks.

In my experience, points.com is a horrible deal. It's a shame there aren't better options, but when I need to trade points/miles I go to the Coupon Connection forum of Flyertalk. Or I make deals with friends/family/coworkers.

+1.

FWIW, if it had been a good deal, FTers would have been all over it. ;)

Why don't you look into the useful Webflyer Mileage Converter first?

As far as Points.com goes, there are a handful of threads about them. Some examples:

http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/miles...oints-com.html

http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/miles...-exchange.html

It's also costly to use Points.com to consolidate miles. See jsammerman's demo calculation for details. If you are looking for GCs from Points.com, I don't know that's a good use for one's miles since I hardly redeem miles for GCs.

MaxLovesRio Aug 29, 2009 4:24 pm

The only time I use points.com is when I need a partner activity during some airline promo. Trading a handful of miles on one airline for one mile on the airline running the promo can sometimes get you to a different promo award level and mean 1000 miles or more.

Indeed, it's a miracle how they've managed to stay in business all these years. Who actually uses them for mileage xfers?

^

They provide a very effective service to that extent.

People who don't know any better. You know, non-FTers.

Points International, Ltd. receives a large portion of their revenue comes from services they provide to mileage programs for sales and member-to-member internal transfers of miles/points and other "e-commerce services". The margin is probably higher on points.com than on those services they provide to programs, but it's not the only reason they exist.

From their annual report, they provide a number of services to programs:
http://phx.corporate-ir.net/phoenix....&p=irol-irhome

• Buy and Gift – facilitates the online sale and gift
of miles, points and other loyalty program
currencies;
• Transfer – facilitates the transfer of loyalty
program currencies among multiple accounts;
• Corporate – facilitates the sale of loyalty
program currencies to corporate customers;
• Elite – facilitates the online sale of elite-tier
status to members of loyalty programs;
• AirIncentives – facilitates the online sale of
several airline loyalty program currencies to third
parties that then are able to offer airline miles as
incentives to their customers and suppliers;
• Systems Design – custom applications
developed for select large loyalty program
partners;
• Integrate – functions as a common platform to
process transactions among third-party loyalty
programs in order to simplify and automate a
complex and resource-intensive process with a
single integration;
• Auction – via a partnership with Truition, an
industry leader in on-demand ecommerce
solutions, this service facilitates the ability for
programs to offer mileage or point based
auctions to their members; and
• Earn Malls – an online shopping mall platform
where affiliate commissions are partly used to
fund an extra incentive of miles or points for a
loyalty programs’ members.

Points com really is a bad deal for anyone wanting to trade. It's robbery on paper

Raffles Sep 2, 2009 6:05 am

Nonsense. It serves a purpose if you get miles in a scheme you will never use again. I had some AA miles, for instance, from flying a Mexican partner airline. I was able to move them to Priority Club which, quite frankly, was better than leaving them to expire in AA. (This option is no longer available as AA now restricts transfers to those with a 25k balance.)

You can also get some freebies out of it. Sign up for the Alaska programme with a Canadian address, for example, and you get a 3,000 mile sign-up bonus. You can then instantly transfer this to 1,020 Priority Club, 63 Sirius points, airline miles etc. What's not to like?

points.com activity also counts towards the current Priority Club '10,000 points for 4 partner activities' promo.

frank3355 Sep 5, 2009 7:09 am

Agreed with all above. Points.com is a terrific thing to keep tucked away for those last minute emergencies when an account is about to expire, or a bonus is associated with a (small) transfer. But as for transferring large #s from account to account, it is a complete waste of hard earned miles/points.

New Points.com SOX big time

Just received the email about new Points.com. Logged in and played around for a while. I absoultely hate the new site!

The letter size is so small I almost needed a magnifier to read through.

Previously one could see all the GPX trades without even having an account, now you have to log in.

The communication emails said United Airlines Mileage Plus, and a few others were going to be new partners. Well the only thing you can do with United, Accor and the new "partners" is to register your account so you can see the latest balance. No mileage swapping/purchasing/GPX. This totally dents my enthusiasm - I thought I could abandon my orphan DL miles to top up my other accounts, not!

What does everyone think of the new Points.com?

ArizonaGuy Aug 5, 2010 11:11 pm

I can't even log in. Enter my email and password, click the login button and nothing happens.

iolairemcfadden Aug 6, 2010 6:25 am

I agree. Last week the site was offline for about an entire day well they did the "upgrade." Its extremely clunky now.

At first it could not add new GPX trades, and after that started working it had a problem with my Amex Credit card's security code, finally yesterday I was able to post a new GPX trade... But the GPX trade that posted/completed right before the conversion is not visible - I saw it in my Alaska Airlines and Continental accounts long before they notified me.

The only new items I can see are some promotions link and a big facebook tie-in link.

Jim055 Aug 6, 2010 11:30 pm

The layout is horrible. I still can not find things. Trades are way down. It looks like they never beta tested with actual users. I hope it does not totally kill the site.

foxberg Aug 12, 2010 6:52 am

I spoke to them, sent them messages. All I got was "we are working on fixing bugs". The problem is, this new site is one huge bug of itself! You can't find anything, layout is terrible, there is no way to sort programs in any meaningful order, can't copy info from the programs (like FF numbers, for example) to paste elsewhere, trades are displayed in an idiotic way. They erased all previous trade history! There's a problem with AmEx MR program, I can't register Finnair. When I complained about Finnair issue they told me that this was Finnair's problem. Well, I have no problem with Finair site. Then, there is no button to update balances. Even the new color theme is horrible. There isn't any one good thing about this new site aside from extended number of programs. But did they have to butcher a perfectly working site just to add a few more partners? Oh, after I posted a couple of nasty comments about there new site on the "earn opportunities" board I got banned from posting there. I'm afraid the days of my trades on Points.com are over now. It was a very good site once.

That would be nice :D I wish MCR had AA vouchers. Then I would definitely hit LT GLD at least.

Back to the topic, I just rediscovered Award Wallet site. To my surprise I was already registered there, I just forgotten about it. That is by far better then Points. If they offer find a way to offer mile purchases and trade Points will go bye-bye.

AwardWallet is SO the way to go! I love it! I've centralized my whole family's (7 people) FFNs under one login and I'm able to see each of their 5-8 FFN balances under one login and have one-click login access to each site to redeem the miles. If anyone would like to boost me to a free pro account, PM me for an invite.

I just signed up to Pro for $1.00. I honestly see no difference at all except that now I can see all the expiration dates.

***EDIT*** I take it back. Just got an email from AW telling me to move the mouse over a plus sign next to the program. It shows all the program activity now! Well worth the buck!

CC Issues

I know the credit card issue was discussed with regards to American Express, but they've now flagged a VISA I used as "declined" -- even though, of course, I call the bank, everything is okay, I'm able to use elsewhere without a problem. Egads. Between the AMEX security code issue (I can't use my SPG AMEX) and the VISA card issue (anyone else get a card declined for no reason?), I can't take advantage of the two trades I see, that I want -- that I've been able to find in the MESSY interface. You can really tell the beta testers were NOT frequent fliers...sad. As someone predicted in the thread, I worry it's going to kill the site. Doesn't anyone read about web usability anymore?

Yes, I tried to set up a trade request with my SPG card and the verification code would not take.

I think they will try to get the site to work better since they want to make money with the trades.

Jim055 Aug 22, 2010 10:16 am

They need to turn on the old site. Trash the new site and start over from scratch. I personally would like to see Award Wallet get into the trading game.

Exiled in Express Aug 22, 2010 11:05 am

What types of trades are you doing on the GPX? I looked over the list and all the trades seem to be 2 points for 1 "inferior" point plus an amount of cash nearly equal to the purchase price for the inferior points. The only use I could see would be to propose one of these poor value trades and hope for someone with more money than brains to take it.

zilliontw Aug 29, 2010 1:17 am

Points.com down COMPLETELY

As I am typing this right now the whole site is "revamping". They really need to get the old site back to prevent further loss of customer confidence and credibility.

I used GPX to transform orphans into giants :D eg a few Ks DL + a few Ks CO = 10K+ AA!

No more Hotspex exchange

I wish that Points.com and Hotspex would not have ended their relationship. Laundering a few Hotspex points was a great way for me to keep a couple of my airline account balances active.

Points.com

Has anyone successfully completed a trade on points.com lately? How quickly were you able to do so?

Did it on 9/1 from USAIR to MM and back for the Grand Slam...both were instant.

sdtumbleweed Sep 9, 2010 9:24 am

I've got a trade pending on "get & move". It's been 10 days now, and still pending.....:(

bobinla Sep 11, 2010 1:24 am

Now there are missing trades...

I was able to run around the system using a new credit card each time (though if you try and use it a second time, it won't take and will be flagged as declined), and placed (on separate days) two different trades. One on August 26 that in the "account history" section is still shown as "pending" -- no action has occurred -- and another one on Sept 1st that has now completely disappeared (and YES I am sure I placed the trade -- I received a confirmation # which I promptly printed out). And both of these trades were for different accounts. And a third trade -- one that I posted early on (early August-ish) -- was accepted by someone early Sept and that too is still "pending", even though it's beyond the promised 72 hours for a trade to be finalized. And I even saw a post in their "exchange" board that says "DO NOT USE THE TRADE FUNCTION ON POINTS.COM -- IT DOES WORK" -- which, I now know. Great...my advice: until they go back to their old system or PROVE they've fixed their new one, don't do trades (though, for some reason, I have had no problem with their exchange function).

sdtumbleweed Sep 11, 2010 12:18 pm

I traded Skymiles for OnePass miles on August 29....they immediately charged my CC and deducted the points from my Delta account......but they still haven't shown up on my CO account.....several live on-line chats resulted in "give us another week" answer......:rolleyes:

iolairemcfadden Sep 12, 2010 8:08 am

I'm waiting for some AK miles that I traded for CO miles on 08/30/2010. I had a similar transfer go through right when the site changed, it took forever for that trade also.

The site was down for a few days when they did the upgrade/downgrade - to me that indicates how poor they are - modern companies can upgrade their websites overnight just fine...

rrgg Sep 13, 2010 11:05 am

I've been trying to make a swap for the US Airways Grand Slam promotion.

Points.com displays errors for the following programs, which all used to work at the old site. Is anyone able to make swaps with these programs?
  • Distincia: XXX is not a valid DISTINCIA membership or account number
  • MySmartRewards: Invalid XML
  • Phonehog: System Error
  • Starbucks: System Error
  • Juremiah: There was a connection problem updating your balance.

I already double-checked everything on both ends. A week ago points.com told me they're fixing problems and to try again later, but I've seen no change.

foxberg Sep 13, 2010 12:25 pm

Guys, you gotta be joking. They can't make their site operational, can't get some balances right, and you want to TRADE? Good luck with that. I visit this site every other week now just to remind myself how pathetic they have become. This is another reminder that some things are better be left the way they are. Instead they took down a very good website and instead of making just a few tweaks substituted it with a complete garbage.

Jim055 Sep 13, 2010 12:57 pm

I have to admit I have never seen a website implode as badly as Points.com

Its absolutely worthless now.

I merely want to swap 1 mile between 2 of my own programs in order to complete an external promotion.

bobinla Sep 14, 2010 12:08 am

Implode indeed...

I finally received a customer service response to two of my three "trades" I mentioned previously in this thread. One was canceled because of credit card issues -- probably the same credit card issues I outlined previously (of course, I did call and check (again) with my credit card company and nothing is wrong with my account or the card). The second trade was not completed "due unforeseen issues with the Posters account. Please feel free to come back and post/accept another trade." Well that's not likely to happen anytime soon. And, of course, the third trade -- the one that disappeared -- has yet to be even addressed. It's just no longer and apparently trades with which I have a confirmation code for and a print out for exist solely in my imagination...

In addition, Points.com is SERIOUSLY harming others who are ignorant of the fact that they can't just trade any airline miles for another airline miles. It's a huge disservice, especially to JetBlue clients (and JetBlue themselves) -- as they've introduced trades with them and I can't imagine their customers experience are any better. Sad, sad, sad...

Old Points had that idiotic policy that they would block your credit card if you made more then 3 trades in a month. I lost a very favorable trade once because of that.

I find this Point.com explanation hard to believe - for the two trades I've been involved with Points.com has charged my credit card weeks in advance of the trade being completed. Honestly a review of my credit card bill is the first alert that a trade is in process.

What has gone through for me this summer is two postings (that I put up) for I get 15k Alaska Airlines for 10K Continental.

I'm one of the posters of those random crap trades - none of the really bad offers have gone through but I leave it up just incase someone sees my offer as worthwhile. I feel I never know when someone will have some miles they feel are worthless and want to trade them away. For example if I still had my 1,500 US Airways miles I'd probably happily trade them for 500 AK miles (3:1 ratio).

Edit - also the fees to trade still seem rather high, so I feel the out of pocket cost to me is more bearable when the trade is uneven. And a final note - the trades are not quick so make sure you plan way ahead, this is not good for last minute top-ups...
