If I have the AMEX gold card that gives me membership rewards, can I still get the AMEX plat. card that gives the 50k bonus of MR points? Is it recommended that I cancel the gold card first and then apply for the Plat? Will I retain my MR points if I cancel the gold card? Thanks!

My understanding is that they are separate offerings so having one card should not affect getting the bonus points for a different type. I had the AMEX Premier Rewards Gold Card when I opened the AMEX Platinum Card and received the 50k bonus. There are probably some other factors to consider when to close your Gold card such as how long it has been open, total number of AMEX cards (I have 5 active at the moment), when the annual fee is due, etc. The general guideance here (when the card was opened primarily for the purpose of signup bonus) seems to be to cancel after 6-12 months. Given the benefits of the platinum card I will be keeping it open for the full 12 months.
