The first thing I look for on these credit card checks is whether they waive the cash advance fee. If so, I file them (never know when they may come in handy); if not they get torn up right away.
I agree that very few airlines credit miles on credit card checks or balance transfers. Even indirect approaches no longer yield miles - I read some years ago about somebody who was using his credit card to buy $5,000 worth of travelers checks at a time (WITH miles), then depositing them to his checking account and using it to pay off said credit card. The cards put an end to this pretty quickly!
