Need input from the Veterans!

I got into FT a few months ago, then became insanely busy with work and lost touch of the goals i had in mind (using the system for all the points i can im cheap! )

I have a working starwood business card
a working citi/master with a-advantage (just ordered 1k in coins to get the 30k miles.

So here is my question... I am going to register for some more cards (and get my wife on the bandwagon as well), and here is my total miles/points count. I am curious what cards/venues you would have me pursue from now on.

Starwood - 43k points (there was a huge screw up from the personal card, which i never got.) but Amex is working with me to get me the other 30k points.
American Airlines - 30k miles.

I have the ability to register for business and personal cards... Im curious about your guys' input on what i should chase down to rack up the most without a crazy amount of spending (i can easily do coins to get spend limits met so that doesn't bother me).

Thanks in Advance,

Luke

I'm no veteran but this seems like a logical choice:

i have read through pages of speculation that its almost impossible to get that? unless i have been completely missled... and the true facts have gotten lost in the jumble which often happens here.

It's difficult to get all 3 but it's not hard to get at least one, provided you haven't gotten a different Citi AA card in recent months

Applied for visa and Amex on same day. Got both and have already received both bonus rewards.

Read through the thread or at least the last few pages and you shall find the answers you seek.

Clifnotes...apply for 2 personal same day and you MIGHT get both...ditto for 1 business & 1 personal, but I'd recommend sticking to 2 personal same day if you don't have a legitimate business. Make sure to clear your cookies between apps or even use different computers and/or different browsers to ensure a new app.

So is it dumb of me to think i could get 150 from this (already have the MC) and my wife could get 225? i have to be dreaming... but if someone thinks its feasible i would love them to death!

SPG... anyone know of any good promotions on SPG.. i may be blind and missing something there. but cant bring myself to use my 2 card options for her with the vanilla reward for spg... i need another 30k motivator!

The only thing that matters is if your app with Citi was less than a year ago. Even then the MC doesn't seem to affect getting two of the three current offers. I've had an AA MC for years and got a Visa and AmEx with bonuses on each recently.

You should be able to get a 75K business or personal card, whichever you don't already have. But hurry. The offer expires at the end of this month.

It appears that you haven't yet touched Chase Bank or Bank of America.

  • B of A offers 25K Alaska Airlines miles for minimum purchase, first year annual fee waived. Alaska miles can be used for flights on America, Hawaiian, and many other airlines.
  • Chase offers United and Continental Airlines miles cards with good bonuses, and its Preferred Sapphire card. They are touchy about issuing too many cards at once, so I would stretch applications for these out. The general buzz is 6 months between applications, but many report that the time is much less than that. Since Continental and United are merging, I am assuming that the United card will continue to be offered and the Continental card will be dropped. So I would do the Continental one first. The Sapphire card transfers its points to Continental. I suspect that Chase would be less sensitive about the timing for this card, since it is not a true airline card and since they seem to be pushing it hard. So I would do it second. Continental and United are Star Alliance carriers. In my opinion, the Star Alliance is the very best of the airline alliances for actually getting a ticket.

American Express offers many cards, some with mega bonus Membership Rewards points and first year annual fee waived. Those points will transfer to Continental (and Delta and many foreign airlines). That Continental relationship ends September 30, 2011. I would do this one right away. Amex usually permits 3 Amex cards, so your Starwood card should not interfere with getting a Membership Rewards card.

U.S. Airways offers a card with a bonus worth the first year annual fee. It is a Star Alliance carrier.

All of the airline and American Express offers I mentioned are listed and fully described on my website below on the Credit Cards > Annual Fee Cards page. The Preferred Sapphire card is listed on the Credit Cards > Bank and Other Travel Cards page.

And we haven't even started with the financial and other offers. You might want to look at those, especially the brokerage offers, to see which you want to accept, before planning which credit cards to get. Or, just assume you will become as addicted to this stuff as are we, and go for everything you can get, assuming all points and miles will be used somehow, sometime.

Get your wife to sign up for the bonuses as well. Miles within a household on a spg account are transferable.
