Do prisoners earn FF miles?

I live in SMF and frequently see prisoners being transported on UA in and out of SMF (Folsom Prison is 30 miles from the airport).

I assume prisoners fly on a contracted government rate, with the 2 LEOs who are escorting them.

Since the airlines take the position that the people who actually travel on the planes earn the miles -- not the company or governmental agency which pays for the ticket -- do prisoners earn FF miles?

No they don't.

But the sheriffs who accompany them in theory cannot.. but they do anyway, by showing their FFPs at the gate and not at check in.

If the fare class earns miles they can claim missing miles later (if they have a ticket #)

As a nrsa prisoner of my career choice, I don't. A prisoner can earn miles. Airline rules don't prevent accrual based on your choice of careers, as long as you are on a fare paying ticket, and they are. Most likely they would expire, unless they bought some mileage plus magazines or use a united branded credit card, or ticketed someone with the miles.

They can use miles to upgrade their return flight to the prison.

Or the equally likely return flight to prison, since most offenders re-offened....

One can only call collect from jail. But I'm sure ICC will accept a collect call.

I believe that would be termed "cruel and unusual punishment".

They should be allowed to get the miles. It would help re-integrate them into society after they're release.
