Difficult award trip

I am trying to get someone from ICT to SJU in March on an award ticket. I cannot believe how scarce they are and how terrible the connection times are. I have learned that they no longer release award travel 330 days out and that sometimes the are released later. What are the chances if I wait that I will be able to get something closer to the March date? Anyone have any info?

any particular airline?....good luck...

edit to add....some ff pgms allow free award changes if the origin, destination, and airline don't change...

so, if you can book now, even w/a bad sked, you could improve it if something better opens up...

The answers to all your questions, and the truth of your statement about 330 days, depend on the specific airline. You'd do better to post this question in that airline's forum, or add a post identifying the airline and then ask a moderator to move this thread. (Click on the exclamation point inside a red triangle under your name by the first post.) That's where the experts on that airline hang out.

ticket

Unfortunately, i am sure part of the problem is you are not flying out of a hub. This reduces your possibilities substantially.

Likely running into Spring Break competition.

I'd try checking ICT to the hub(s), and then the hub(s) to SJU separately. That will tell you which leg is the problem (though it may be both). If the problem is getting out of ICT, then consider if you can drive to an alternate airport, or even get a cheap cash ticket to somewhere with availability.

Most of my miles are on AA, but I can also manage Continental.

Both are going to be very hard since CO uses its IAH for a ton of Mexico connections, which will be busy during spring break, and AA's MIA hub is the same. This would be a hard trip to get a good flight on paying cash, so mileage may not happen. Unlikely things are going to get better, as you're going to be relying on a small plane (or two) to a hub and then travel to a peak spring break destination at the height of spring break.
I'd second the suggestion of seeing if there are flights ICT-ORD, ICT-DFW, ICT-DEN, ICT-MIA, ICT-IAH, and then ex-hub-SJU.

Have you checked lately? There are a lot of departures and returns for 17.5K each way on AA for ICT-SJU.

For example, departure dates:

March 1 2 3 7 8 9 16 17 20 21 22

Return dates:

March 7 9 10 11 12 14 17 31

Best of luck!

Tons of 30k F seats too. (Not that I'd necessarily invest extra miles in F on this itin, but there are even more dates without 17.5k coach seats that do have 30k F seats.)
