Ignite Talk on Mile Running

Hey folks,

A couple of weeks ago i gave an ignite talk at OSCON on 'hacking frequent flyer programs'. It was a short 5 minute talk, most of you know what it talked about. I thought people might find the slides interesting.

http://www.slideshare.net/rabble/hac...ograms-4913196

O'Reilly did record me giving it, so at some point they may post the video online.

ps, i think travel buzz is the right place to put this post, no?

As this involves mileage running, maximizing FF programs and topics related, it seems more suitable for the MilesBuzz forum, and I'll move it there. Ocn Vw 1K, Moderator, TravelBuzz.

From the great slides, I can imagine the talk must be awesome too.

I am eager to watch it.

Thanks for sharing. Can you talk more about the topic "$2000 To Top Elite Status" ?

Thanks

Yes the slides look very interesting and I look forward to the video itself whenever it becomes available.

Not sure why you call it hacking. That got me hoping you had found a technique for getting into AA's computers and setting my lifetime miles at a number suggested by me.

Would be great if you could do an AA MR seminar sometime. We seem to be lost in an ocean of UA stuff.

That's what people were doing last year when there was DBEQM. Double elite qualifying miles. Right now it'd cost you somewhat more.

I just bought myself a fancy new bluemic yeti, i'll record a 'screencast' version of the talk.

Some people thought i was crazy. But it was a conference of people who do both are programmers, and fly to conferences a lot. So i think a lot of people got the idea. I know i wasn't the only person who'd done mileruns the room.

Larry Wall, the inventor of the Perl programming language, was there and seemed to really enjoy it.

In the context of the conference, OSCON, it was clear to everybody there that hacking meant figuring out trick's in the system, rather than cracking in to servers.

It never occurred to me do a MR seminar. Perhaps i could do one online. See if anybody was interested. I do know that the limitations of a 5 minute talk meant that i had to leave a lot out. The one thing i'd like to include, but didn't, was challenges and matches. Undocumented ways to get status quickly.

If i did do an hour online workshop on MR's and status on AA. Would anybody be interested? Would you be willing to pay for it? How much?

I'd be interested but not willing to pay.

I might be willing to pay there was some justification related to clear out of pocket cost to you to hold the workshop - as in GoToMeeting charges X to run a Webinar for Y people, therefore you are requiring a payment of X/Y to cover your costs.

Like iolairemcfadden, I too would be interested but not willing to pay. There are many reasons and I should at least try to explain. First, FT is a community where we learn from each other with no cash transactions permitted anywhere. Even on CC. Second, while I may be curious, you do not have proven credentials. Once you become a well known expert, people might consider paying (outside FT of course).

Please look at the following thread, especially post #2, to get an idea of the kind of mutual teaching and learning goes on here: http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/commu...th-2010-a.html

I too see nothing about hacking anything nor do I see anything not readily available on FT.

Not to be too nitpicky...but the title of slide 20 is "ExperFlyer.com" instead of "ExpertFlyer.com"
