Proactive flight change on TACA - common?

I was set to fly from Asuncion-Lima-Bogota-Medellin today with TACA. When I arrived in Lima there was an annoucement: "Mr. Maracle, please identify yourself at the door when deplaning." When I did so I was directed to a TACA rep standing in the jetway who handed me a new boarding pass for a direct flight to Medellin with a stopover in Quito, though I didn't quite catch why.

Looking at the monitors in the airport, it seems my flight to Bogota was 6 hours delayed already, and the other flight to Medellin was leaving right around the same time so they put me on that one. But I was quite shocked that they would be so on top of things as to have noticed that there was a better option for me and to be ready with an agent standing in the jet bridge to meet me!

Not only that but I was assigned an exit row seat, my checked luggage was correctly put on the new flight, and I arrived in Medellin an hour earlier than originally scheduled! I found TACA Peru to do a nice job overall, the planes were both new and nicely maintained and the food was tasty. The flight crew uniforms were even stylish. ^

So I'm curious if other airlines are capable of this kind of change? I suppose it was ultimately in their best interests, it might not have been possible to get me to my destination on the original itinerary and that would cost them money. But still, I feel like an airline in the US wouldn't have taken any action until the situation was beyond repair for today.

EDIT - sorry, meant this to go into travelbuzz

I had a similar experience on TACA. My fiance (then-girlfriend) and I were paged as we were getting off the plane in San Salvador. We had a long layover scheduled in SAL, and they asked if we'd prefer to take the earlier flight that only had 1/2 hour layover. We said sure as long as we still had seats in business class. They handed us boarding passes with seats next to eachother.
