Who came first?

I know that our North American Members of this community had already collected miles at times, when in Europe nobody even thought about traveling by aircraft.
Seriously, I am researching about Frequent
Flyer Programs and I have to know, who invented these programs we are addicted to. I think it started with American Airlines. Is this right? Does anybody remember the exact year and the initial name of the program (already AAdvantage?). Thanx a lot.

I believe the AA program originated in 1981. Others followed soon. I know I joined UA MP in May 1981.
