A colleague of mine is going to spend his vacation in San Francisco from May 17 to 24...and he's looking for a decent hotel with reasonable rates (around US$100 a night)...he's Diamond with Hyatt so he wants to stay at a Hyatt as much as he could...but the choice is really open...anyone has some good suggestions, or opinions about the hotels in the area ??

This would be a great time to use Hyatt points-the Park Hyatt is wonderful but not at the price you are looking for.
I'd suggest using free nights but the weekend rate is usually $209, so a combination of free and weekend rate might work.

Entertainment Card and most "certificates" from airlines provide 2-4-1 nights and are often easy to get in a city.

Also at Hyatt's site they have a link that posts weekend specials once a week. The Hyatt at Printer's ... is nice, older and parking a little tough. Might be a little closer to your unreasonable (without some pormotion or coupon) budget in SFO for a Hyatt.

You could consider sharing a room?

Have NOT stayed there but the Westin St. francis is centrally located, nice rooms, nice facilities... a bit on the expensive side.

The Hilton HOtel/Towers is generally where I end up being put up... gigantic and average rooms unless you get upgraded to a mini suite but again, good location.

There's also the Fairmont which I think is San Fran's oldest hotel.

There's also this little hotel off Powell street whose name I can't recall. It's near this breakfast place "Sears" (not affiliated with the department store chain) with great pancakes and waffles. I can't recall the street either.

Nice homey little hotel. Some business people stay there. I think rates between 75-85 dollars. Fodors gave it a good writeup.

Try the King George (block off Union Square) at about $100/nite. Small, boutique great location on Mason Street.

I recently found $100/night in SF tough, even with FF hotel certificates. As I recall, best I could do was an average of about $190/night at the big chains with one of those puppies. But I was staying an odd number of nights, which makes the 2 for 1 certificates a bit less valuable.

A couple of other suggestions. You might try one of the Joie de Vivre (spelling? sorry if it's wrong) or Kimpton hotels; these are two local chains of small boutique hotels, some of which are pretty nice. I stayed at the Rex, which is close to Union Square, for about $140 a night including breakfast. These places are atmospheric, small and quirky, and can be fun, but are perhaps not the best if you need a full range of business services.

Second, try 1800hotel.com, a hotel consolidator. When I went earlier in the spring, they were offering the Crowne Plaza for $149 a night. In retrospect, I wish I would have taken this offer -- it's a big hotel tower right by the Rex and I probably could have gotten Priority Club points.

Just stayed at the Sheriton near the airport. Decent enough for under $100. 24 hour pool/spa health club and room service. Good staff. Not centrally located, obviously. One nice thing about this stay is that with Starwood Account, only 5 stays gets you 10,000 points on United or American.

I stayed at the Rex a couple years back..it
is close to Union Square, about 1/2 block west of the Hyatt. Room was small, but not bad for the money. I would rather spend the difference in room rates on nice restaurants.

I agree with geo1004, go with the King George.

Lovely small hotel, very quaint, great service, excellent location.

I haven't been there in a couple of years,
but Never paid more then 95 bucks a night.

Perhaps some should reread the original post! He says his friend is a diamond with Hyatt and would like to stay at HYATT!!! As a dimond, he/she would be upgraded to Regency Club, where available, which include snacks in the evening and free drinks (or discounted). Sometimes the snacks will do for a light dinner. Also a free breakfast buffet is served, a heavy eater can make this do for breakfast and light lunch. They will also be upgraded to a preferred room as well as earn Hyatt points for free future stays.

If someone were looking to fly cheaply on United as a 1k, telling them a cheap flight on American would not be so responsive?

I'm going to guess tedhl's buddy is going to check with Hyatt and see if he can get a $100/night rate. If so, great!!! If not, since "the choice is really open" he might move on to some of the suggestions listed above...
