To be fair it's important to note that Marriott donated $500,000 to the Red Cross Haiti relief effort. http://www.blogs.marriott.com/marrio...-in-haiti.html

You can donate Alaska miles in 1,000 mile increments to Angel Flight West to help aid transportation of people needing medical treatment:

According to posts in the thread in the AA forum, receipts are slow in coming, but they do arrive eventually.

My point is they take the opportunity to reduce their liability on the cheap.

The $500K corporate donation is tax deductible and actually help their earning report!

OT: Med supplies donation

It will not earn you any mile / point - but if you live in NYC or in South Florida - check your area for donating your excess Med Supplies if you have such.

Last night I googled it and found there are a few organizations in NYC take these, and a few in South Florida take these. I know from friends that private doctors in our area are organizing their Med Supplies donation that would be ferried by Private Planes directly to the island.

Med Express Urgent Care Centers in all 6 South Florida locations (from Boca to Miami) will take unopened Med Supplies including sterilization materials such as peroxide, pain relievers, cough medication, etc etc both adult and children dosages, are very much in needed. You can google their clinic locations and hours for your area.

Why do they never have bonus mile promotions for donations to other worthy causes, like Cancer Research, Children's Hospitals, Diabetes Research, etc, that benefit Americans?

What makes you think they don't?

Here's but one example:

In a similar vein, be sure to take out the biggest mortgage you possibly qualify for -- that way you have a bigger interest expense deduction!

(I've always been a sucker for those deals where for every $100 you pay, you get $33 back!)

But at the end you still pay $77, versus if you dont have a mortgage you only pay $33.

Spending miles for Charity is absolute rubbish.

Spending money and getting miles might be a better deal for everyone involved, considering you trust the institution behind that scheme.

JMHO but I've found sweeping generalizations to usually be absolute rubbish.

It's the rare blanket statement that applies to all situations. On this topic, it's not hard for me to imagine that there are those who have more miles than they can/will spend in the foreseeable future. (It's not hard for me to imagine because I know several in that situation.) Why would it be rubbish for those people to donate some miles rather than hard cash?
