The Amtrak pass-through has been effectively closed off unless you also ride on Amtrak and are willing to spend some money with them.
You can use your CO miles to redeem on UA (and vice versa) but if you have 20K in each account you cannot combine them to get a 40K reward. Any other movement of the points will result in a rather miserable devaluation.
