Route Maps - help in deciphering

I would be grateful for a little help in working out how to maximise a fare by using the routemap.

This is an example return fare on BA from Rome to Melbourne. It allows a total of 8 transfers, 4 in either direction. I assume a transfer is counted as transferring from one leg to the next, and not the legs themselves. So if you are allowed 4 transfers, then it could mean 5 legs.
For example in this fare (X is the transfer): FCO - LHR X LHR - SIN X SIN - SYD X SYD - AKL X AKL - MEL

From the route map it looks like this:

Is this a valid interpretation of the route map?

One thing that confuses me somewhat is the dashes up to the point of AKL then the (QF/BA) insertion. Is that equivalent to the dash?

Any help would be gratefully received.

Yes and yes.

FCO-xLHR-xSIN-xSYD-xAKL-MEL is valid routing on the fare you are talking about unless there are other flight restrictions. Try ITA if they can price out the itinerary above without fare break.

Thanks very much Tclin, I was beginning to feel ignored! Perhaps everyone felt that a member from 2002 surely should know that!

I have been trying ITA, but for some reason it hates QF. I've tried everything like turning of checking availability and the like. BA seems to bring much better results. I'll keep trying.

The reason this has all started is because I need a flexible ticket, and since my organisation is paying so much for the ticket in the first place, I may as well max it out.

As for the rules of the various fares I'm looking at, the limitation is "as per routemap".

Try these two queries separately if you are using "Month-long search" on ITA.

#1,
FCO:: LHR QF SIN QF SYD QF AKL/-codeshare
MEL
#2,
FCO
MEL:: AKL QF SYD QF SIN QF LHR/-codeshare

I suggest you use "Specific dates search" after you get brief idea, then you may want to make minor adjustment according to your preferences. "Month-long search" won't give you all possibilities.

I tried a few things out on ITA. The routing rules allow passage via Africa but ITA simply baulks at that.

Anyway I sent a proposed itinerary to the travel agent with the fare code clearly indicated. She priced it out as a bunch of one-ways, which was incredibly expensive, and a narky comment about 'why would you want to do all that?' .

So it is to war again with the agent.

Why is it so difficult at times?
