I am looking to do the LAX-ORD-DUB MR in November. I notice it is the same price for me to do ORD-SAN-LAX on the return as it would be to just do ORD-LAX.

I live in SAN and it is expensive to do the whole MR from SAN, but I could easily Amtrak up for the start and just end back in SAN if I skipped the last segment. Would this invalidate any of the miles I did complete?

I certainly would let AA know I was not going to fly that last segment after returning to SAN so they don't evacuate the airport looking for a "missing/suspicious" passenger.

BTW, I'm only asking cuz that last segment gets into LAX too late to take the last train of the day back to SAN and I'd have to stay over or drive up, pay for gas, parking, etc.

This is known as "hidden-city" ticketing and is a big NO-NO among the airlines. You run the risk of being charged a much higher fare and losing your miles from the trip and maybe even your entire FF account. Don't do it!!

This also wouldn't work if you had checked luggage as it would have to be checked all the way through.

fzwinter is right...this is hidden city ticketing, but people do disembark at intermediate points to save money. As long as you don't make it a habit it shouldn't be that big of a deal. I'd suggest telling the GA that something came up in LA that required you to stay, this way the plane isn't held up for you.

Oooh, yikes. I do not want to risk any penalty. I will just drive it, worst case, stay the night. Plus, I'll get an extra 500 miles out of it and it will still be cheaper then the MR booked from SAN.

Just tell them your sick (stomach ache / food poisoning ) from something you ate in ORD or on the flight accross the pond.

You dont feel like flying and are going to find your own ground transport home. Afterall, for all they know, you live in Orange county, and flew out of LAX for price or whatever.

A pattern of doing it would perhaps yield extra attention from the airline at most, a single occurence is nothing to worry about.

It will work out just fine.

Or book with an overnight stay in SAN, like 20+ hours (if ticket allows). That way it won't seem strange if you only want your bags checked to SAN. But make sure you let them know in SAN that you'll be missing the last leg, so there is no delay for your fellow travellers.
I've done this with SK without problems.

Skipping the last segment is more like "throw-away ticketing." I've done it here and there with no problems.

Definitely, do not check your bags, or if you do, check them in to SAN only... also, if there are any schedule changes between now and then, you may be able to re-schedule that last segment for the next day--making it easier for you to skip it.

As others said, do call the airline and let them know of you CXL.

No one I talked to at US seemed to be upset over this. The GA just double checked and made sure I understood that the rest of the ticket would be forfeited.

Although that's not to say all airlines have the same rules...

The overnight connection in SAN is the way to go. With an international ticket you have 24 hours to connect. No need to take the next flight. Schedule the connection for the next day. You should be able to then check bags only to SAN. In fact you probably won't be able to check them to LAX as the airline won't hold them overnight.

You can tell them that you won't take the next flight if you want. However I would not. It just raises more questions. No one will notice if you don't show however. They will certainly not hold the plane or call security. People miss flights all the time. If the airline ever inquired I'd just say that I was too late so I just drove instead. I have done this a few times and never had any issues. Personally I think the risk is so low that I'd probably do it for like a $20 fare difference.

but i would like to fly SIN-VIE-DUS.

how would OS react if i tell them at checkin that i want to fly only to VIE on the ticket and than use an award to fly to DUS ???

are there any clear rules that i have to fly the last segement? or am i legally allowed to skip a leg?
i have done this before on other carriers but not on OS so i would like to know if there i run into trouble doing this.

Well, I just know that in KUL there is no own OS staff... I would tell them the reservation department messed up the itinerary and it was not possible to change it afterwards so you had to purchase an extra ticket. Act like it is more bothering you than an advantage... They will symphatize and can delete the last segment. But it depends if its a handling agent, they might have no authorization to do that.

Make sure you check the current policy regarding onboard liquids before you dpeart, too. I did a LAX-DUB MR last November, and security in SNN refused to allow me to have my 3 oz bottle of contact lens solution onboard, saying it was "unnecessary". If you're not checking bags, be prepared to deal with all their ridiculous regulations!
