Also, Exp Flyer shows ticketable (I think? Or at least viewable by EF, presumably in the GDS.) QF routings HND-MEL-SYD-CGK on 3/21. The outbound would depart at about the same time, and end up connecting to the same outbound SYD-CGK sector -- despite the dog-leg to MEL first.

Might MEL sidestep the prohibition of stopovers in SYD/AKL?

Cuz I would also love a week or two in MEL for some good coffee and a side jaunt to HBA.

PS."Old-fashioned" everything works for me, and usually IS more "fun," anyway.

I can't make MEL+SYD work because there is max transfer restriction. EF showing it doesnt mean it will price --> do you see it on ITA or sabre by any chance (i tried and failed)

There are seasonal restrictions. It's Jan 1 to May 15 or Aug 1 to Nov 30.

So, until May 15 not until end of schedule.

I further worked on this and also got this baby to work with 12 hours in CGK and routing CGK NRT BOS LAX JFK on return

*A matched, but their fare has templated routing so you can't go quite as far out of the way.

Just to clear up something from earlier regarding Australia:
  • There is no prohibition on transfers or stopovers in SYD, but the JL fare only permits transfers in Japan/Indonesia (2 each direction) and North America ish (3 each direction in YVR/CONUS/Mexico/PR).
  • The AA fare requires the stopover to be at the gatewayin Area 3, so in order to pick up the stopover, you must route via LAX-SYD (no TYO).
  • But this is a mileage fare, so a stopover in SYD will get HIP checked. It's a valid construction, but you won't like the price.
  • The only really plausible stopover is in Japan on the JL fare, which exempts Japan from HIP checks.
  • The AA fare offers a ticketed point deduction of 2,000 for travel via DFW or LAX, which helps some of these long routings.
Fare construction with a stopover in SYD and a HIP check (INXQFVN1, JFK to SYD is the forced fare):

Very nice analysis! I forgot the HIP check in Syd thats causing all this disarray. Can you also quickly have a look whether aa offers 2000 for each dfw and Lax or it has OR (could we get cum 4000 deducted?)

The rule is

Code:

/VIA THE PACIFIC/ MPM 12078
MILEAGE SYSTEM APPLIES BETWEEN ORIGIN AND DESTINATION
MILEAGE SYSTEM APPLIES ORIGIN TO DESTINATION
TICKETED POINT DEDUCTION OF 800 MILES APPLIES
      WHEN TRAVEL IS VIA HNL
TICKETED POINT DEDUCTION OF 2000 MILES APPLIES
WHEN TRAVEL IS VIA DFW OR LAX

and NYC-DFW-LAX-TYO-SYD-CGK still incurs the 20% penalty.

Meanwhile...

*A is actually better, thanks to the common Pacific template having an extra SFO after the HNL agglomeration.

I could probably do slightly better but ITA is starting to smoke a bit :)

20,503 miles one-way on *A - you should be able to do a mirror return. Note I am pricing with inventory validation off, so you probably can't fly these literal dates.

The *A fare also allows a stopover in Japan for ~200 USD, which is nice.

Yup - both fares allow that, AA is 100usd per stopover.

The mileup card can make it worth your time.

Help me understand why it's worth it when it's only 2x/$ at best? Still requires lots of spending to make it worthwhile to get the LPs for OWE.
