CAUTION - TURNAROUND
"One customer did have issues. Wang Guanran, who documents his travels on hktravelblog.com, had his plans to travel to New York on Wednesday cut short when he was prevented from flying by immigration officials in Vietnam... he was detained by Vietnamese immigration officials, who said it was illegal to return to his city of origin while in transit." - Source:SCMP, 2 January 2019

Visa Information: check out the Vietnam visa/VOA thread in the Asia forum. You can get either a visa on arrival where you get the stamp on arrival) or a "looseleaf" visa in advance from a VN Consulate in the US (which allows you to go straight to the immigration queue). There are sometimes lines for the VOA stamp and so the loosleaf approach can save you some time.

Seat Assignments

per NWPlatinum below - Cathay blocks out all seats except for 2D for some reason. I never understood the reasoning behind this but in any event just contact them for a seat assignment and they’ll let you have your choice. They like to block out seats for people with bassinets and babies. But you can usually get 2A, which is the best see if you’re solo traveler. Just say I want seat 2A and I’ll move if requested at the airport (never was asked to move)

Basic Visa Options for US Citizens
1. One month, one entry
2. One month, multiple entries
3. Three months, one entry
4. Three months, multiple entries
5. One year, multiple entries

Everyone needs an e-visa approval before boarding if they will enter the country. (e.g. clear customs). Connecting flights - even on separate tickets - do not require a visa IF IF IF the connecting airline has a counter in the transit area. (The airline may have their own rules.) Going back to the same country is not allowed without clearing customs first.

Expect the visa check at your point of departure. (Computer will flag your ticket.) The actual stamp is received on arrival (in most cases). (There is also the possibility of a visa insert with no need to go to 'visa on arrival'.)

Lines at immigration were very long. I would strongly recommend against trying to do a B2B with KA.

I'm new here, nice to meet you all. Maybe someone has already questioned but I jut want to make sure again.
My return flight from JFK will be arrived at HKG 06:45AM, layover 08h 55m and the flight to DAD by KA is at 15:40.
I want to drop my last segment and will return to BKK from HKG. How can I do it? request check-in staff at JFK? I also have checked-in luggage as well.

Thank you.

you are not going to be able to get your checked luggage. You will need to carry on.

Given your long layover, you could ask the staff at JFK to short check your bags. It would be reasonable to say you plan to go to a hotel and get some rest. They *should* do it. YMMV. smitty06's advice to do carry on only (if possible) is good advice.

If you plan to do this, I would suggest you do not use CX for both tickets. You risk cancellation. Again, YMMV.

Well DAD is not a transfer airport so the transfer counter was literally gated off with a metal door. I have a visa.but wanted to get around the queues at immigration x2...

Luckily I had 4h layover I think anything under 1:30h will be close to impossible in DAD

I'm just here to highly recommend spending at least a couple days in DAD, more specifically Hoi An a bit to the south. Great town and nice beaches when I was there last.

After a 2 hour conversation it is now clear, they have changed all A Class tickets booked directly through CX. All A Class availability has been removed for ticket changes and only new bookings show A Class. Pretty ...... really when those who didn't book direct can change their flights. Wanted to change to November where there is plenty of A class available and the manager at the call centre said my ticket cant be changed to another a class ticket and that only f class is available. This was after i asked her to check for dates where new a class tickets are available to be purchased.

My complaint is less that they have stripped all a class for changes but the fact they have only done if for those who booked direct.

In a sense they have only half honoured it.

SGN transit

Anyone know if 1 hour is enough transit time in SGN if arriving from SIN on SQ? What's the transit procedure like in SGN? Are there manned transfer desks, or do I have to rely on having a boarding pass (can SQ check me in to the CX SGN-HKG flight?) I checked and see 1h as the MCT but curious if anyone had experiences. Also wonder how lenient CX would be on me if I did miss that connection ... my HKG-JFK in F isn't until the next day so I could in theory just catch another (J) to HKG and still make the original long haul flight.

I really don't understand these queries. You've booked an insane first class deal that is probably once in a century, and you want to risk it with a 1hr connection on separate tickets? Even if it is possible, the slightest delay or mishap will screw you over. I doubt CX would help you out, especially given how numerous posters above have said they can't make date changes far in advance. Common sense...

I'm currently booked HAN-HKG-LAX-IAD on A class for the 18th May. However AA has cancelled the LAX-IAD flight (AA303). Anyone else in the same situation?

Called in to the CX call center, the only option they are offering are to either take the HKG-IAD direct in J class the same day, or take the AA flight (AA1339) the following day. Tried to request for a change of dates for the HAN-HKG-LAX as well, but was told no change allowed because "super low fare A class ticket".

Anyone have any idea what other options there might be?

I found A/J class available and tried to change the return, specifically requesting historical fare which I was eligible for due to same routing and class. Still quoted at $40k for the change . Don't expect them to honor the contract at this point.

Data point. Flew Han-HKG-SFO in A on Jan 8th. Had some trouble as my middle name was not on original booking and when changed it did not include my AS FF #. After some back and forth and forwarding of picture of BP and original document showing that I paid for the ticket this posted yesterday: I am MVPG01/14/2019CATHAY PACIFIC AIRWAYS

Flight 872 HKG SFOCredited 6,914 / 24,191 / 31,113

did CX give you any trouble for no middle name on booking or did they just add it in at check in?

Thanks for the input! Are you trying to change it before departure or after? Booked on Cathay website or third party?
